Finally got the engine to almost idle. It will start and idle for about 3-5 seconds but then just looks like it loses spark or fuel and cuts. When i restart it revs right on up to about 1750 and then drops back down and dies. It idles, just not very long. Any ideas?

Definitely sounds like a fuel issue to me, spark tends to either be there or not, seldom does it start fine then "go away". Are you sure your carb is clean, a clog will behave the way you describe.

Check your fuel filter Some of the newer holleys have a fuel filter inside the bowls behind where the line attaches. Also The filters are unidirectional so make sure it's not backwards. If that doesn't work, check the float levels. Not enough fuel kept in the bowl will cause it to stall. good luck

Sounds like your idles speed is too high or your choke is adjusted way too rich. Also check your float levels.

Would the floats cause it to not start at all. Mine turned over a couple times now just clicks. Like no gas is even in there?! Ive only had this ('70 250) for a little and it always started slow but now, nothing? Dont mean to jack. 1st post. Thanks!

Well it's a 2 barrel 2100 Motorcraft pretty sure its circa 1966, and yeah the sparks is okay it just seems like thats the problem cause it dies quick. But the float level it think would be high enough for it to idle since I can rev it up and it doesn't hesistate but I could be wrong. It just seems that the idle circuit on the carb is goofed up. Do I just need a new one, or should I give what I have a real good cleaning and tuning. Also I recently rebuilt the carb before I rebuilt the engine but I haven't changed the fuel filters so I probably should take care of simple stuff before I start assuming it's something deeper. If anyone knows otherwise please tell me.

Totally sounds like a vacuum leak. mine did that, started up ran way up fell off and died. the only way to keep it running was to keep your foot on the gas. it was a vacuum leak where the carb met the intake. that is my guess

Before I sealed up the carb it didn't run at all. With some new gaskets though it got it to where it is now. Maybe I will go back and redo it to check for leaks. Hopefully it solves the problem. I will report back on the results. I am guessing there is a vacuum leak somewhere. Just have to find it!

Try spraying some carb cleaner around the outer base and manifold, or around any of the gaskets in the carb's body. If the idle changes when you hit a spot it is because the fluid temporarilly sealed the leak. Assuming of course you can keep it idling long enough for this test. Maybe with an accomplice?
