How much should it run new, used, or from a junkyard? Just need to put back on for smog in a year...planning in advance. While we're at it, how much for an OEM cat back just in case the sound police pulls me over when I install the offroad Pypes X in front of my Spintech Prostreets...like I said, I plan in advance :D

Thanks for the help everyone...this forum is sure sweet

Don't know what the inspection tests are like in Cali but, I have an O/R Prochamber and passed with no problems. They just hooked into the computer and ran the inspection test on my car.

the only legal midpipe in CA is the stock one. i work for a smog referee and if we see anything but the stock one, the car will fail. boost controllers are even illegal in CA, as well as aftermarket blow off valves.

Cool, thanks bdcardinal...that's the kind of hard facts I was looking for. Stock one will have to be back on for inspection then. Bur just for ultimate clarification, even if a car has a catted aftermarket X pipe that has CARB legal cats, it still won't pass the visual even if it could pass the actual sniff test?

Another quick question, I read in on the posts here a few days ago that supposedly new Mustangs burn so clean that they would pass even without the cats...that sounded like :bs: to me...care to chime in on this.

there are no CARB legal aftermarket cats. that being said, the magnaflow ones have a CARB EO, however the car must be out of the 8 year 80,000mile federal emissions warrenty, and the owner must prove to a referee that the stock cats failed, damage done to them by taking them off and bashing them with blunt objects wont cut it. well theoretically a perfectly running motor shouldnt require cats to pass smog. however, taking the cats off a car in CA is a very bad thing and the fines can get very very high. also being in socal, not sure what part but im going to assume the LA area, the BAR is starting mobile smog stations, where they put a road down to 1 lane and watch every car pass by, if they see a car that they think might be modified, they stop it (if u run they have police waiting to catch you) and they have you get out of your car, put it on a mobile dyno and run a smog test on it. the visual inspection is done by BAR officials that will go over your car with a fine toothed comb, even opening the glovebox for aftermerket computers and tracing wiring harnesses. its uberghey i know, but they found out that was the only way to stop the ricers.

Damn...you gotta love L.A...I'm starting to think that the only good thing about this city are the women (ya know all the MAWs - Model-actress-whatever)...
so the BAR has decided that the best thing to do in a grossly overcrowded and congested L.A. is to stop traffic even more? :bang: ...wow god forbid this bankrupt state spent money where it really matters...like gang intimidation and violence, immigration, drugs and drunk drivers...yes I believe this state is way too lax on drunk drivers...one year without a license for first time offenders...please... in NY they confiscate your car and sell in addition to you no longer having a licence...in Arizona, (anyone correct me if I'm wrong) you serve 30 days in jail.

I appreciate the info and I'm in no way directing this rant towards you bdcardinal since you have no say on the rules, you only enforce them...but the vast majority of cars out there in CA are never going to be modified. Heck ricers and muscleheads represent a tiny portion of drivers in L.A. and I doubt that them not running any cats is making any difference at all to the air quality...and where are they going to put up these BAR spot checks?...I'm gonna guess they may racially profile and run them in Monterey Park, Alahambra and others parts with high Asian concentrations...in which case I smell a class action lawsuit against the state...plus if the state wants to play high and mighty then how come they don't spend some money and get new school buses...you know what I'm talking about...these ancient POS buses from the 60s that ferry the future of L.A. around town and billow out thick black smoke into the schoolchildren's lungs..........okay, that felt good...anyways man like I said I appreciate the info and you should post on the West Coast threads on this forum and kill the heaps of misinformation regarding the CA smog process. :D

haha, u know theres a lot of those statements i agree with. i do think that we need a smog program, the air quality getting substantially better is just one reason. they pick random locations for the tests. my boss' wife got pulled over in her X5 and they were gonna do the smog check on her car until she told him her husband was a ref, then they let her go. i will start posting on the west coast forums. i totally understand why people want to take the cats off, however you can still make good power with stock cats. and if i were to take mine off id follow the idea of keeping the stock pipe and putting it back on when you need the inspection.

You should be able to find a stock H pipe for next to nothing. ****, I have one collecting rust as we speak. I only keep it around in case I need it someday.

Go over to modular depot and place a thread in the "parts wanted" section. I bet you could find one for less than $50.
