stock 460 wont start

ok 460 with rebuilt heads new timing chain, wont start, took it to compression on number 1 put the dizzy on number 1 and harmonic on 0 when you crank it sputters give it gas it shoots flames through the carb which is new. what could cause this ?? dis cap, rotor, spark plugs??

Possible wrong firing order or misadjusted valves (valve hung open on compression stroke).

Anypopping noise with the backfire? Distributor could be off by 180 if no kick over. Turn the distributor full advance and try to start it, turn it full retarded and try starting it.

I'll bet the distributor is 180 out...This happens just about every time I have installed a new engine. If it's easy to pull the passenger side valve cover, pull it and make sure both valves on #1 are closed when the timing pointer is pointing to 0 (TDC).
