The wiring is even simpler if you allow the fan to run after the motor is shut off.
As a weird aside, there have been cooling fans that blew forward through the coil by design. The one I know of is on some newer model Gold wings. The idea was to push air forward below a certain speed (15 mph, I think) so it wouldnt heat the rider's legs up.
