Stripping undercoating from underside?

Any ever strip the undercarriage of their car? I was under mine today and the undercoating is flaking off in several spots down to the metal and rust is showing, i'll be pulling the engine, tranny, and driveshaft anyway so I thought this might be the best time to strip it down to the metal, sand down the rust and por-15 it and the engine bay. What would be the easiest and fastest way. The undercoating is still real thick in some spots.

Easiest and fastest would be to hire someone else to do it. Short of that, a heat gun and some scrapers is about the only way I know of with the car still mostly assembled.

This job is a BIG BIG BIG pain in the butt. the BEST way to do it is to have your car acid dipped...however, you have to strip the car down to nothing to do so.

Getting under the car when its not on a lift to do this makes it a real chore. Like 1320 said...a heat gun and a few scrapers will do it....following by a diegrinder with a sanding wheel and a wire brush attachment also. i began to strip my undercoating off, but there was no point in it. It was still intact.

I can't remember his screen name, but he did write ups on his trunk and rear wheel area, and it looked amazing. Personally, I went with the scraper/wire wheel method when I did mine. It sucked, but the warm happy feeling of knowing that the whole underbody structure of my car is clean, handled, and rust-proofed is really nice.

I used a wire wheel attached to a drill.

but I went over it first with a putty knife and a chisel. the stuff was dry enough to break off the big chunks, then I cleaned it up with the wire brush.

I had mine sandblasted. It was like 700.00, but the car was nice and clean, and I didn't have to do it.

After stripping 30 years of prior paintjobs off the top side, I was not going to lay down and do the underside that way.

Thanks, I think i'll just spray the rust spots for now and take it to get sandblasted when I get the $$$.

I sandblasted mine, with the car on jackstands. After two weeks on my back, eating crap, it was done... $700 is a steal! I'd never go through it again...

Eastwood sells some undercoating remover that actually works if you get most of the thick stuff off first. I used a stiff putty knife and scraped most of the big pieces off then I soaked the underneath with that undercoating remover. It sort of dissolves the stuff so that you can easily get it off. I think I used a scotch-brite type pad to scrub off the dissolving undercoating. It is so nice to have all that crap off the bottom of the car.
