Stud/Pedistal mount rocker arms?

Hey is kinda a dumb question that I should know, but what are the differences between stud mount and pedistal mound rocker arms? Also is 3/8 stud the stock SBF size? Will 7/16 stud mount rockers take any machining on the heads. If I get 1.7's will I need bigger valve covers? Someone fill me in on this please.

u can add the 7/16s stud to your heads. machine shop can do it not sure what it will cost . with a 7/16 is stonger then pedistal mound. pedistal mound rocker torque to 20 pounds that all no ajustment. with the studs u can ajust them. pedistal mound rockers only have a 5/16s bolt to hold them down so stud is stonger. with stud u have to have gide plate. stock ho valve might not clear.

Stock HO valvecovers will clear 1.6 full RR's IF and only IF you grind the baffles out of the insides. Now as far as 1.7's, I don't know you'd have to grind the covers and then test-fit them I suppose, and make sure the rocker arms have enough clearance to fully open and close

I have the Ford Racing 1.72 blue rockers on my e7 heads and the only bit I changed on my valve covers was removing the baffle below the oil fill tube. No clearance issues whatsoever.

I fit '93 Cobra/Crane Energizer rockers(1.7) under some stock cast covers('89) by making a thinner sheetmetal baffle for the oil filler. Now they barely fit under my Mickey Thompsons in the '68.

Pedestal rockers are in fact adjustable, but it's a PITA because they have to be shimmed. Studs are much easier to adjust, not to mention stronger. You'll need to pull the heads and have them modified if done the right way.

Pedestal mount roller rockers are "bolt" down style. Stud mount rockers on the other hand use studs that are already mounted into the head and lock nuts to hold them in place. If you are using stock heads, they are pedestal mount. You can have them machined for studs if you plan on upgrading to AFR, Edelbrock, or Trickflow heads, you might as well go with stud mount because these heads come machined for studs rather than pedestal mount.

For my GT-40 heads, I picked up some Comp Cam conversion studs that allowed me to avoid the machine shop and put in steel stud mount Comp Cam rockers.
