Can Some One explain to me what is the difference between a stud mounted rocker arm and a pedestal mounted one. What does the stock 78 302 have?? Is it a stud? sorry if this is a really dumb question Maybe can some one post a picture of what they both look like ?? . Im currently in the process of rebuilding a 92 H.O for the II and im looking at getting either the AFR 185 or the AFR 165's heads and i need to know what would be the best bet the pedestal or the stud? What are the pros and cons of each of them? thanks for the help

Stud type has the rocker retained on the stud by a nut over the fulcrum.

Pedestal uses a bolt down through the fulcrum.

A '78 302 would have a pedestal type head.

"Best bet" is going to be a matter of personal preference.

I'm pretty sure that AFR 185 and 165 heads all have studs. Studs along with roller rockers are the preferred method for high performance applications on a pushrod V8.

dmoody- both the AFR 165 and 185 let you choose between pedestal or stud.

IMHO, I'd pull the valve covers and see what you have. If there's a nut that goes right through the center of the rocker arm, you have studs.

If you're planning a rocker change anyway (upgrade to 1.6 or 1.7) then I'd definitely go with stud mount.

1.6 isn't an upgrade, that's the stock ratio.
