Studs snapped off in head.

Welp...I was removing the stock headers and snapped two bolts on the passenger side. How do I go about removing the studs stuck in the head?

cut a slot in them with a dremel or cutoff tool and you could try backing them out that way... soak them with some PB blaster before hand. Are they stock heads?

soak them in pb blaster and grab them with vice grips

No way to do that. The stud surface is in the head. Didn't come off right at the head of the bolt. Yeah stock heads.

Don't use easy outs either. You will wind up making the situation worse. Sounds like they are rusted in there pretty good. Your gonna have to either remove the head and take it to a machine shop to have them remove it or just not use that bolt hole. If you smear some permetex ultra copper on both sides of the gasket, you should be fine and not have any leak.

Don't use easy outs either. You will wind up making the situation worse. Sounds like they are rusted in there pretty good. Your gonna have to either remove the head and take it to a machine shop to have them remove it or just not use that bolt hole. If you smear some permetex ultra copper on both sides of the gasket, you should be fine and not have any leak.

I'd like to not have to remove the head. lol! Problem is that the bolts that snapped were on the same exhaust port. Good thing is that it's a BBK header so the pipes are stuck together with the plate. It may work without leaking if I tried putting the header on and used some RTV sealant. I think I'm going to try the easy out. Can't hurt more than it is right now.

easy outs are so hard they become brittle and often break off inside the bolt. drilling an easy out out(that sounds weird) of a bolt that it snapped off in is nigh impossible.

so how far in are the broke bolts? what have you tried so far to get them out, the RTV idea is most likely not gonna work.

I'd say like an 1/8th to 1/4" in.

ez outs ALWAYS BREAKS OFF

i HAVE NEVER HAD ONE WORK.

There is no way of getting around it... It has to come off and go to the machine shop.
RTV or any of that other stuff is never going to work.
Its going to be more work trying to rig it than just sucking it up and pull it off.

DO NOT USE A E Z O U T. If you break it off you are realy screwd b/c u cant drill threw an ezout.

it will break off. they work for some applications but not for old rusted bolts that have been in a block for years. If you are serious about using an easy out, dont say i didnt tell you so. Its just gonna cost you more for the machine shop to remove it becuase now you have a broke easy out in there.

This just happened to me with a water pump bolt in the block. We used an easy out on it but we did it very slowly and took it easy with it. We managed to remove the bolt and now life is good again. Like they said above you don't want to break the easy out in the head.

Yeah....I think I'm gonna try the easy out. I'll just drill a big hole on the stud to use the biggest easyout I can find. If it breaks off in the head then I guess it's time for an upgrade!!
