Suggestions for Polishing stock VCs

I bought a buffer, wheels, and buffing compound. But there are some scratches/marks on the valve cover that seem too deep for even the emery cake. What would you suggest? Use a grinder? What grit? Sander?

Are you talking about the Fox valve covers that are aluminum, or the 94-95 valve covers that are steel?

You DONT polish steel.
It rusts..
You polish Aluminum
CHROME steel

You could polish it then clearcoat it, but it WONT look like mirror, like aluminum

The parts that I have polished look very reflective. They will be fiine for me. I just need to get the right medium to take down the scratches.

what grits are you using? alot of times i dont take my time to sand it long enough and have to go back to sand it again.

That's why I said "you dont polish steel" the metal is different as you go down in layers...it's not perfectly smooth.

You can't polish steel. I'm not trying to be ignorant when I say "That is something Rainman would do", but the reality is it will turn out like ***** if you do that.

If anything, sand down with 240 and 320 then go get the valve covers painted.

Yep, I sanded down my valve covers before I painted them and it just didn't look right. Couldn't get an even finish across the cover.

I painted mine, and the finish was I did light sanding, couple coats of primer, couple of color, and couple of clear.
