im about 2 days away from painting the stripes on my 65 coupe. i need some opinons from everyone....ive decided to go with the super snake stripes (Center stripe is 10", outside stripes are 3" with 2" between stripes on the 67) but im not sure on what sizes i should go because i have the 65 with a cowl induction hood. my hood measures 25" wide at the front nose and 26" wide at the rear cowl. how should i taper these stripes so they look right?

i would make the stripes follow the contour of the cowl, i don't think they would look right otherwise, also the stripes should be a bit wider on the roof as well. the best to do it would be wait until the car is painted with base color and then lay out the stripes on the hood roof trunk, tail panel and valances to make sure everything looks right and flows well before paint the stripes on. one other thing to think about if you are going to go with a glossy stripe i would do the stripes on the base color coat before doing the clear, that way the paint will level all the way across and you won't have ridges where the stripes are

Whatever you decide, make sure you get the taper right or it'll look funny. Wider at the cowl than at the hood's leading edge, taper down slightly across the roof, back to normal for the decklid and back. You'll know if it's right or not when you mask off the area.

Just a couple points---

There's a difference between the "new" GT500E Super Snake stripes, and the "original " 427 Super Snake stripes. The new look to be about 3", 1", 11", 1", 3". On the original Super Snake, the "gaps" are much wider, and the center stripe appears to be slightly narrower - like 3", 2", 10", 2", 3"....

I don't believe that Super Snake stripes had the taper like the conventioanl Lemans stripes. Lemans stripe dimensions (for reference).

Finally, it's just personal preference, but from a painter's standpoint, it's actually much easier to lay down a solid band in the stripe color FIRST, then tape the stripes off, then lay down the main color. MUCH less masking to do that way. :bang:

I was looking at your car domain site, what dimensions are your stripes? I am going to be painting my car soon and was trying to decide on the stripes or not. I have a cowl hood also and really liked the look of your car.
