I ran thru everything on that surging idle list and my car still ran like crap. I really dont understand why everytime someone wants to put a carburator on thier car they get a ton of crap for it. I have fuel injection, and i keep it because thats what i know, and i had too much money into it to get out. If someone is more comfortable tuning a carb then why tell them fuel injection is just as simple and take these 20 easy steps to get it running right...

I say if your comfortable with a carb, then put one on the car. Chasing stupid idle issues sucks, and can take forever to find. I chased my issues for 2 summers.

ok, question for you stykthyn... I never removed the spout.. so obviuosly done it all wrong. Should i go ahead and set timing to make sure its right. I have tried to adjust idle before. Im reviewing the surge list. this is the first time ive seen anything about removing the spout. So where do i start. I know i have to use the list. But since ive done this without removing spout do i just start the list, or do i need to make sure timing is on.
and yeah carb is eaiser for me. Ive always worked on chevy's and never had to check all these sensors and stuf. just vacuum leaks and little petty things, id love to keep the fuel injection...just have to learn about a ford..

To set the timing yes you need to take the spout out. Loosen the distributor hold down, hook your timing light up, then start the car. Turn the housing of the distributor and have the light pointed down at the timing marker on the front left side of the engine at the crank pulley. Then just turn the housing till you get where you want the timing. Turn the car off, tighten down the clamp, plug the spout back in and you are done.

Even with a carb timing is still extremely important. Switching to a carb may not even solve your issue. Most of that checklist is still valid.

We were adjusting the TPS reading it through the twEECer and it was pegged at 3.9v. I loosened the screws to adjust, went to far, pulled the TPS up and the two tabs inside the TPS were missing. No wonder we were having issues. Got a new TPS and car idles like a champ. Can be that easy, though that twEECer let us know about that.

Iv gota new TPS, but question is?? im fixing to start the checklist. but when i did it before i never messed with or unplugged the spout. So i am gonna start the list from the beginning. but im not sure if what i did before wouldve messed with the timing. I dont think it would but i wanna do it right and check everything. So would trying to set the idle and tps without unplugging the spout have messed anything up?... that way when i go down the list i know its done correctly

Well setting TPS doesn't really need the spout pulled out. It's nice to do, but not necessary. I set mine all the time leaving the SPOUT in with no issue.

Setting timing with the SPOUT in would cause an issue. With it in, the computer adjusts timing and is usually around 20-30 degrees at idle. So if you leave the spout in and adjust down to 10, you will have issues.

Highly recommend getting a timing light, pulling the spout, and resetting to 10 degrees. Then if you put the spout back in, you'll see the timing jump back up to 20-30 degrees.

So, I think I said it wrong, Im staying with efi, but my question is...... when i went to adjust the tps and idle the first time, I never unpluggeed the spout...so has that messed up anything. or is it ok, to start the list and figure out from there. I dont wanna do anything till i make sure i havent thrown timing off since i attempted to fix surge and tps with out ther spout unplugged??

If so i will look at timing first and make sure its dead and then hit the list, but would trying it w/o spout unplugged have messed anything up??

No. I do my idle and TPS set all the time with SPOUT in. It still works fine.

If it will make you feel better at night, you can try redoing it, but i don't see it being a major issue.
