t-5 swap

i may be doing a t-5 swap in my car and i have a few questions. I have already confirmed that it is a v-8 trans out of a 90-91 by looking at the id tag. I may be buying it off of a friend who acquired it from someone else. The original owner told my friend that the trans had been rebuilt by crazy horse in south amboy. what my question is, is there any way to tell if it was really rebuilt. what kind of things should i look for to tell for this? thanks

its hard to really tell. You really take your chances with used transmissions.

When i did my t5 swap I got all the parts in a deal i found, got the t5 and all the small parts for the swap. The guy said it was a good t5 lol yeah right, reverse, yes REVERSE was out, tranny was whiny and the 3rd gear synchro went out within 2 months, it was just flat out weak. I ended up replacing it later on.

Check the play on the input shaft, if its stiff and no play is there thats good, hints at healthy internals and indicated bearings and all that are still in good shape. If it has play, its not good. means there is wear and play in the tranny isnt good. The weak t5 i had had alot of play in it.

input shaft not having any noticible defects.. new gaskets.. or you can call the shop and maybe they may have kept the tranny #

Yep, but you've got to pull the tailshaft housing which requires driving out roll pins which are in the shifter box area. Then you can pull the top cover. It's probably a real good idea to do it rather than wait till its all in the car to find out its junk. Spend a little time now or a lot later.
