Bought my 5.0 already converted from 2.3 to 5.0 conversion. Also carbed with no a/c, wiring harness or smog junk :) Anyway. I'm wondering if these T5's are worse to use than a T5 from a 5.0. I know there is a significant gear difference which is too my advantage, but will I split the tranny with moderate abuse? I'm gettin some AFRs, 3.73s, MT ET Streets so I'm thinkin this T5 will be my weakest link. Thanks

Yes, they are weaker.. but to tell you the truth, I my 4 cylinder T-5s lasted longer behind my 83 then any V8 one I had behind it. Some say change the pilot bearing, but I never did and had no problems. I did have one explode on me, but I was runing 12s and launching on drag radials.. and that was after 2 years of having it... I would say that's pretty good, even for a V8 T-5, that would have been good. With 3.73s, the gears are going to go WAY fast.. I used 3.08s with the 4 cylinder T-5, and it was like running 3.73s basically. I say go for it, if it's your only choice. I eventually went with a 3550 after breaking 6 t-5s, and the 3550 never gave me any problems. Good luck. :nice:

Only difference is number of splines and diameter on input and output shafts. Both T5s are the same internally, with the exception of the 4-banger T5 having a steeper(lower) first gear.

Don't the have a lower 5th gear too? I can't see a 4 banger revving at only 2000 on the highway.....usually 4 bangers are upwards of 3000 rpm at cruising speeds.

silverstripe, there is no diference on the input and output splines.if there was then you'd have to change the clutch disc and and d/s yoke to use one.you only need to use the correct pilot bearing.the 4 cyl. t-5s are tough.mine lasted almost 2 years before i changed it over to a t-5z.i never blew the 4cyl. one apart,i just put a new t-5z in it.

I'm running with a 4 banger T5, once it blows up, I'll get something better until then... who cares. I busted my timing chain and rear-end but the T5 held up to the abuse somehow. My engine had almost 300,000kms (newer engine going in the car soon) and the T5 comes from a beater that had over 260,000kms.

You need a Federal Mogule #202 bearing for it to fit properly. I have 3:73's and with this T5, it's freaking crazy... not too fun on the highway but in town the car is a real beast. I can downshift to 3rd at 45mph and break the tires loose and end up sideways hehe :D :D :D
