t5 question for the experts

Can anyone confirm that I can use a 1999+ 3.8 t5 with a 5.0 if I swap in the shorter input shaft for a 5.0? My understanding is that it has the same gearing (i.e. 3.35 1st) and torque rating (235) as the 80's 5.0 t5's. This transmission is going into a very light (2400 lbs.) car and won't be abused, so the torque rating doesn't bother me. Thanks for any help. I'd use a 2.3 t5 but don't want that gearing.

I'm no expert.....but here goes.

I'm thinking something is going on with the newer speedo's. Arent they computer controlled? And not mechnical like the older ones? Research that or maybe somebody who's done this will chime in.

Other than that your on the right track. It will bolt right up.

What kind of car? 2400 pounds sound like fun.

Thanks, I'm using an electronic speedometer, so that shouldn't be a problem. The car is a '74 mgb with a '94 5.0 and a narrowed 8.8 rear. Just need to get a t5 without spending 1/2 the budget. I've got a worn out t5 that needs about $600 in parts to rebuild, but I can get a 2000 v6 t5 for $300 with only 30,000 miles on it. I think I'll go for it.

yes you could do this. swapping the input shaft shouldnt be too tough, here is a how to:

FYI i beleive the 99+ 3.8L T-5's are rated at 300 ft-lbs.
