I'm starting to plan for my next winter project on my '89 hatchback. Car currently has the stock T5 that I rebuilt a couple winters ago. It shifts nice and I don't have any problems with it except that it's very noisy. It's been that way since I bought it. Gears didn't look too bad, but I'm sure it has been beat on pretty good in it's life. So I'm thinking of going to a TKO600. What do I need to make the swap? I know bell housing, clutch and flywheel will need to be changed. Can I keep my aluminum drive shaft? Anything else that need changing or concerns?

Car is making considerably more power than stock. 306, cobra intake, y303 aluminum heads, B cam, Vortech V3, air to air intercooler, 70mm TB and running on a MS DIYPNP. Rear has 373 gears and 31 spline axles. Car is just a weekend street car/hobby project. It may see a track run some day. Is the 600 a good choice? Better options? Fire away, I'm open to suggestions.

The driveshaft will need a new yoke which should come with the trans if you shop carefully.

The rear crossmember will need to have the tack welds on the tubes that the long bolts go through ground off. Next, the crossmember gets pushed as far to the rear as it will go. Then it needs to be tack welded in place again.

When you get done there should be at least 3/16" clearance between the crossmember and transmission rear housing up near the mounting pad corner that faces towards the front of the car.

If there is not sufficient clearance, you get to fabricate some steel spacer pads to raise the transmission up so that the corner of the crossmember clears the rear transmission housing.

I would recommend our billet steel flywheel 463100 and a Street Extreme Clutch kit 75307. Give me a call at 714-630-2764 x 223 and I'll be happy to answer any clutch and flywheel questions you may have.
Kind Regards,
