I want to know how much HP & TQ can the T56 handle? I'm getting it from D&D Performance but I'm going to be running somewhere around 500-600RHWP with the engine that I'm getting built. I'm not sure if the T56 can actually handle this without any upgrades or can it? If not can you guys tell me what I need to upgrade to actually run 500-600RWHP safely. Just a list of parts would be fine. Thanks

Is this a street car or a track only car ? What rear end/gears are you using and what tires are you using on the car.

The reason I'm asking this is, if you are building a street car it will change what parts you should use internally for the trans.

It's going to be a street car. I'll be using 3.73 gears. I'm running the stock saleen rims with stock tires.

i dont know exactly, but ive yet to hear of a 03/04 owner blowing one up.

That's what I'm afraid of. I don't want to dump 30K into the car and have a ticking bomb! So if I'm going to be spending this type of money I want to be sure that I have something that will take the abuse.

your everyday T56 should be able to handle around 450 lb-ft of torque. If you get a viper-spec T56 they say it should be able to handle well over 550 lb-ft. ALthough there have been terminators making 500-600 on regular T56s...now whether or not that is a ticking timebomb...I dont know. But those are the numbers claimed by Tremec.

Edit: Im sure SVTtech will come on this thread and be able to tell you exactly what a T56 can and cant handle...

Thanks for the info bro. I'll just wait and see if he chimes in. :nice:

Sounds like you are going to be streeting some serious HP. I would recomend geting some high nickle content internals for the trans. Then again it all depends on how you drive it. I've seen a stock non-world class T5 take a lot of daily driving/HP and 3650s blow up in under 10,000 miles. If you are just gonna drive the car you might get away with it. If you are going to be hard on the trans then definately upgrade it.

You also should put in a drive shaft saftey loop and an upgraded drive shaft as well as considering a stronger rear end. If you are hard on it, I don't know how long an 8.8 will last behind 500+ HP.

Thanks for the advise. I'm looking more into this and trying to get some more information. I've had the saleen for about 4 years if not more and It's time that I begin to build it. I've been working on the lightning more and I've neglected the saleen. Now I want to dump some serious money into it, but I want to make sure the T-56 can live up to it's hipe.

ummm I know 2 that have fragged t56's. One only mods were or mid and catback. Other well I know the car makes over 600rwhp on the dyno and he fragged the top of the line D&D t56 upgraded tranny.

rusty - I'm pretty sure 03/04 cobra's all had the irs. And the solid axle for those years would be the 8.8.

I had heard that the 04 had switched to a solid axle 9" but I can't confirm it either way.
No. Both 03 & 04's utilized the same 8.8 IRS.

The weak point on the Cobra T56 was the stock 10-spline input shaft. The Viper spec'd T56's have a 26-spline input shaft on them which gives it a higher torque rating. Many 03/04 Cobra owners have updated their input shafts from 10 to 26 spline units from Liberty Gears.

The T56 is a pretty tough tranny and holds up well under high HP applications. As long as you're not power-shifting the car at those high levels the tranny should hold up. Now getting a clutch to hold that power and last for a while may be a bigger problem...

Thanks for the insight. Which clutch would you guys recommend? Would it be harder to install the Viper Spec T56 or Cobra T56? Chicanesports.com is going to do the install so I'm sure they'd know about it.

Offtopic... Does anyone live in the Riverside, CA. area that would lend a helping hand? It's going to one hell of a install because I have hundreds of parts going on the car. Anywhere from, suspension, brakes, engine swap's, interior, swap transmissions etc. Chicane is going to charge me at least 6-7k and that's just an estimate. So I'd gladly pay the person to help me out. plus beer and food at no cost:nice: If anyone is interested PM me. This wont be for another year or so... but just though I'd ask.
