I have a 1992 GT. The kid i bought it from put a stall converter in the automatic trans. When the car starts the tach go rite to 3000 rpm even when the car is at idle. When the car is reved about 3000 rpms the tach moves and then drops down to 3000 rpms and stays there. How does the tach work. Is it a cable of some sort connected to the transmission or electronic. I heard some where that if the circuit board on the back side of the gauges has cracks in the circuit the tach will not work properly. They said to take the gauges out and have some place re soder the circuits and that might fix it. How do you take out the gauges...step by step will help a lot. thanks

That's what I did, and have not had any problems since.

Exactly.....it would jump right to 3,000rpm and stay there until the motor revved above 3,000 - then it stayed at 3,000 again. I pulled the tach and re-soldered ALL the connections on the circuit board.

Pulling the cluster isn't bad. You need to pop out the headlight and hazard switches first. There are a couple of screws on the top of the pod, in the rear.......just look around, and you'll find all the bolts and screws. Just go slowly, and remember where each one goes. Be careful disconnecting the wiring and speedo cable. If you can, get a Chiltons book, it will help alot.

hey, cevtv i took out the cluster. What do you mean re soldered ALL the connections. What are the little silver stainless clips, Do they come out? Where exactly did you solder? Did you use an ohm meter to check connections? Did you end up takin this green sleeve with the circuit board off the back of the cluster. What about the removable beard board on the top left of the back of the cluster? BASICALLY I NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU DID IN DETAIL......THANKS
