Take me to intake school...JLT vs. KN

So you are saying the gains are minimal and he should instead spend some money on something that also produces minimal gains?

Are the gains minimal? Yes. But he already has a K&N, and if you get any noticable power out of an intake, its probably from the filter more than anything else. The stock intake tubing is plenty large enough for a near stock GT. The TB/Plenum combo would run around the same price, maybe a little more than a pretty intake. Gears would be a better option, but most end up paying extra for the install. I was only trying to reference him to a bolt on similar in price.

My recommendation is to get a CAI off ebay for 40 bucks. Why people spend 250 for a "JLP, BBK, K&N" is beyond me. Its a piece of pipe with an air filter, plastic pipes shouldn't cost two hundred dollars. Its like buying a watch. You can buy one for $60 or buy one for $600 and brag about the name etched on the watch that only YOU can see.

^ I just bought my JLT for the looks since I show it...
Makes the engine look nice instead of some metal pipe or that crappy way the stock one looks IMO :D

does give it a nice whine...i've had a few ask if i have a s/c from car people...haha

5.0 Mustang mag has an article in their new edition where they did some basic bolt ons to a 2003 vert with 5 speed. They added a Cherry bomb cat, Accufab TB, JLT RAI, March pulleys and used a Diablosport Tune.

Before installation the car put out 213.97 RWHP. They then showed the improvement with each addition, the JLT added 3.59 RWHP after the cat and TB were added. All together they added 32.82 RWHP with this setup. The biggest gain was made with the TB adding 16.25 RWHP.

I had this problem last year and looked at both of those companys and wound up getting a Tunable Induction instead of the JLT or K&N

just a TB...no plenum??

wouldnt you need to have a TB and plenum setup to see any gains, not just a TB....?

I stand corrected. :)

I had to go back and recheck and you are correct, its a TB and plenum. All told they spent $1672.94 for 32 HP.

With all that said I too will be buying a JLT CAI within the next month. While I know the prerformance gain is minimal I like the looks of it. Plus I am planning on making my car faster N/A before I supercharge it, so more than likely will be adding some of the same items as in the article.

214whp with a 5 speed PI GT? I'm not questioning your facts but that seems kinda low/disappointing. Is this the average hp # for our cars? :nonono:

I put a K&N FIPK onto a stock tb/plenum. It made a louder air "whooshing" sound but didn't really notice much more power in and of itself. It did look like it provided way better airflow than the stock setup, which mattered to me because I'm slowly building up with bolt-ons before eventually going whole hog with a Procharger and I want the basics optimized first.

Next I replaced the stock setup with an Accufab 75 mm tb/plenum and a spacer. Now there was a MUCH more noticeable difference!! So the K&N could very well have been trying to help, but with the tiny intake in back of it, the benefit went unnoticed until enlarging the tb & plenum.

On the con side: I also had to leave off the bottom bracket due to rubbing, but it seems to hold on ok with just the one bracket. The black plastic isn't the most attractive thing in the world, especially with the polished stuff next to it, but at least there are no heat retention issues.

So I don't regret spending on the FIPK; it's one more component that I don't have to worry will create a bottleneck when it finally gets blown.

So does my wife.....Whine that is......:D

In hindsight, the CAI would have been a heck of a lot cheaper:lol:
