tape on front end

getting ready to go to beachweek. and im taking my car. i just washed and waxed it. when i was done i put blue masking tape on the front part of the hood and bumper. it says for delicate surfaces and made by 3m. ive seen it done before. would it be safe to leave it on from wednesday to saturday though?

Don't have an answer for how long ok to leave on, but I have seen it done by ricers on tv before. I thought they were going in some pretty hot environments.

sure its fine, esp for long drives to avoid chips/bugs etc

Damn that's alot of tape, now that I think about it the NY car show I seen a clear vinyl you put over your paint to do that, and you couldn't even tell it was there till you got up close or knew about it.

I don't see it damaging the hood and bumper. If anything it may leave a stick residue

ya it should work fine...a little adhesive remover stuff can be used if any comes off on the car, but it shouldnt

Yea its fine. I put that same blue 3M tape on my back bumper behind my rear tires when i go to the track otherwise i get rubber and rock chips all over the bumper from my burnouts on my drag radials.

awesome. yeah i have been wanting a 3m clear bra, but i haven't had the time to drive downtown and have it done. not many people install them.

I wonder how much of that crap comes flying off if you wind up driving through a rainstorm...? And then, what happens to said pieces of tape that get sucked into your engine bay? I'd hate to have to pick all of that crap out of where it might get sucked in and shredded by the serpentine belt and whatnot, stuck in your cowl vent, and then having to remove all of that adhesive crap ... ugh.

They make a spray-on clear protective film sorta stuff (I think 3M makes it) that you can remove with a quick spray at the car wash. Supposed to help protect against similar small road debris, sand, bugs, etc. ... sounds like a lot less of a PITA to deal with.

Me, I don't bother - I still have 1/2 a gallon of Rustoleum left that I can use for touching up my front-end whenever it gets chipped on the road...

I am interested in how well it works also. I have an 850 mile (each way) trip to Myrtle Beach for Mustang week, and want to use something to protect the new paint! Tape is a good fall back, but I would like to hear about the 3M stuff.

The only problem I can think of is if the tape gets wet, that might make a mess..

This is true. I want to see if anyone uses the 3M stuff and how it holds up. I debate tossing it on my Audi and seeing how it lasts for however long it stays on. If anyone tries any of this let me know!

I am a design engineer for a converter and we use a ton of the 3M products. I'm actually a Automotive specialist The Blue 2090 take really is not made to get wet, or made for automotive paint systems, however ever make/model can be different. They make the rock and chip guard which is a thick vinyl that is pressure sensitive and permanant on the car, very expensive and you need to have a shop install it for bubble/defect free look. there are a lot of products both clear and white (like you see on new cars) that are approved for Automotive use that will not harm the paint in any way when removed.

Here's a link to the data sheet for the 2090 Blue Tape.. http://www.3m.com/intl/kr/img/single/pdf/2090.pdf It is not really recommended for prolonged outdoor exposure or it will be hard to remove. It will work up to 200 degrees F for 1/2 hour.

ive done it several time. blue is prob the best one to go with. the purple just doesnt hold up to highway speeds. the green is basically to much so i stick with blue. ive done 250 mile trips with the blue and it always holds up.

the last time i did it i stripped my sentra with it. i had blue purple and green all in diff. widths. it actually came out looking pretty good.
