Started digging into my 92 I just bought. Was overfueling and misfiring. Decided to adjust timing first. Realized the distributor seemed to be installed wrong. Didn't have enough adjustment. Was hitting fuel rail. Found TDC on harmonic balancer and installed distributor. Car ran like crap. Removed plug one and used a compression tester and found that TDC is actually at 30 degrees BTDC. Is this normal? I did end up getting timing set right around 12 and it seems to be running decent.

I would bet that TDC is where the balancer says it is. The best way I can think to check is to use a piston stop.

Amazon.com

Here's how you use it.

That would sure be an easy way to test if your balancer has slipped........ TY for the link

Been a bit since I hit this post. Ended up replacing some gaskets and cleaning up some stupidity from previous owner. Took me a while since I live in a zoo. I am still having problems with overfueling like crazy. Thinking maybe the lack of o2's. I also notice that the car will randomly run like crap as I'm driving. If the harmonic balancer is spun, will it randomly jump time? I can send pics of balancer. It is still installed. What would be best view for photos?

Do you have enough history on the car to know whether the timing chain was [ever] properly installed?

Also: What's the deal with the O2 sensors? Are we awaiting a sign from God to indicate that you [need] those?

Pics are tricky, I guess a straight on shot of the hub area with the pulley off.
Yeah, no O2s are a n0 g0.
What else is missing or modified?
On the overfueling, first fix the 02 issues, and check the fuel pump regulator, pull the vac line off and sniff it, no seriously if it smells like gas, tastes like gas then the regulator is suspect, check fuel pressure with engine running with and without vac line on. Note the press here.

Does is have a chip on the ECU? They could have tuned it to stay in open loop where the O2's are not used. Have you tried to pull codes from the ECU? If the car is not tuned then you should be getting a check engine light (CEL) due to the O2's missing. The CEL only illuminates/flashes when there are emissions related codes so just because its not flashing doesn't mean there are no codes present.

If the ECU will not respond to pulling codes then it is possible the ECU needs to be fixed.

Zero history on the car. Younger guy I bought it from said some stuff that i have since forgotten, because after I started digging into car I realized he was an idiot and probably just fed me some bs.

No chip. Engine light is on. O2 plugs are still on harness. I need to pull exhaust anyways to patch couple holes in pipe. Am going to add the bungholes and sensors at that time.

Regulator is good. Replaced recently when I smelled strong gas in the vacuum line. O2 sensors will be added when I drop exhaust. Fuel pressure is another story. Pic is car running and warm, seems low to me, yet still overfueling like no tomorrow. I am going to replace timing components so I'm not gonna worry about tryin to get pics of balancer.

So it is trying to read the O2's when it hits temperature and since they are out in the open and reading high on O2 it the ECU is probably trying to pour the fuel to it to correct that. Once you bet the bungs welded on and them installed that will help this whole mess.

The fuel pressure is way low. Should be 39 psig with the vacuum line disconnected from the FPR (plug the vacuum line) and the engine at idle.

Will update on the bunghole. Figured beavis would show up eventually. Knew I made the right choice joining this forum.

As for fuel pressure, car runs like a frickin champ. Lots of power. What in the hell would cause pressure to drop so low? Faulty gauge? Just doesn't make sense to me that fuel pressure is hella low yet I'm running super fat. What am I missing!?!?

Wanted to update on all my whack problems. Figured out my A9L was bad. Found one on marketplace and the guy sold and shipped it to me for 138 bucks. Came with a jet chip too. That made me nervous though so I pulled the chip, Installed, and boom car runs like a frickin champ. Working out some bugs now. Maybe I should start a progress thread and get Input on some things.

Your gut feeling about the chip is 100%. If it's off-the-shelf, it's garbage. If it's tunable, you have no idea what's on it. It might make the engine rev to the tune of the National Anthem, for all we know.
