Tell me if my problem is with the TOB or release bearing...

At first I thought the sound i was hearing was my clutch fan squeeking or the a/c compressor but this noise subdues a great deal when you depress the clutch. I looked in my haynes and the only conclusion I can find is it's either the TOB or the release bearing. The noise is a warbling, gritty sounding noise that is most evident at highway speeds and pretty much stays constant until you push the clutch in. The car has a tremec 3550 and i don't know what the clutch is... probably stock. 90lx, H/C/I, mostly mild stuff. The sound is driving me batty! Any ideas?

you considered it might be the stock driveshaft? i can't hear bad throwout bearings unless i'm at idle, not cruising.

no i didn't think it could be the driveshaft... i suppose it's a possibility.

I think the Throw-Out Bearing and the Release Bearing are the same thing?

Maybe you meant TOB and Pilot Bearing...

usually the TOB will squeek when it starts to go bad

the driveshaft continues to spin when the clutch is disengaged, so i doubt it is at fault, too. sounds like classic TOB issues. many have dialed in preload into the cable to tension the TOB (like you can by lightly pushing the pedal in). 'V8 only' has a nice write up on the whole scenario, if interested.

I'm interested... i'll search for v8's write up. I don't have the flow right now to have the tranny pulled and the bearings replaced.
