A friend of mine ordered a custom cam from a grinder..i won't say who..but it came in a Comp Cams box and he looked up the specs....yep, it was just a run of the mill Comp cam. The "custom" part was the grinder's knowledge of cams and his role in selecting the cam for his build.
Im sure he didnt pay Comp Cam price though...Thats rediculous!!
I think while most custom cam grinders make their own profiles, you're not really getting a special cam specifically for your engine...you're getting the grind they make that best suits your engine. I've seen the same grind sold to several customers. It's not like they dial up special numbers just for you. Yup, spend the extra $25 to go with a custom grind and make sure you get all thats available for your car.
where are you getting this $215 custom cam?
The other benefit of going custom is for a few extra dollars you can go with a billet core. Supposedly the FRPP letter cams and cheap OTS cams like the Trick Flow stuff are based on a SADI core, which allows for valvetrain flexing and instability at higher RPMS.
What? That sucks man. You can call Comp and have them recommend a cam if that's all you're interested in, sucks that he went through a custom grinder just for that. PM me the grinder's name?
