Today I discovered where the slight vibration in my '94 GT was coming from...the harmonic balancer had decided to come apart @ 225,000 miles.

A search of the forums, following a few links here and there and I had the info I needed to tackle this job. I picked up a Pioneer non-SFI HB at one of the local auto parts store and then I went to the other one to rent the HB puller.

About 3 hours later and my 5.0 is back rolling down the highway without that annoying vibration I would get at certain RPMs that would tend to get better when I would let off the throttle and coast at certain speeds on the highway.

Thanks :SNSign: you guys totally rock :nice:

I've attached some pics of the old harmonic balancer, as you can see, it was in serious need of replacement.

Good for ya...using the search button finds an answer to just about anything you could ask. I never cease to be amazed at some of the projects happening, but there isn't much that hasn't gone wrong or been done to these things.

That's gotta be the most skank balancer I seen yet.... :nice:
Good deal on doing your own wrenching to boot... a stealership woulda nailed you on that job...

Welcome to SN...

Good to see you found your answer from within our little group :nice:

We got most things covered cause we got a pretty diversified
bunch of folk :)

Most of the stuff that can happen :bang: :fuss:

Somebody ... Somewhere ... within the group has had to deal with it ;)

Stealership? Maybe Im just partial but If I couldnt do a job myself and had to bring it in, Id rather bring it to a factory trained tech as opposed to some of the types of people I see come into the parts store to work on cars from independent shops. Me personally, I took pride in being Ford certified

As for the balancer, surprised yours lasted as long as it did. I normally post up the after pics of my HB but youve definitely got me beat. :jaw:

I was inferring "they" would tuck it to him money wise.... not saying they don't know their stuff...

I brought my 99 Pathfinder in as I wanted a full tranny flush at 72k... If I had followed what they said needed to be replaced I would have walked away with a 1200.00 bill.
Those guys are all about making sure they find stuff wrong.. Im my case it was a radiator and lines, lines back to the tranny, rotors and pads, as well as all belts and hoses... WTF ???

Thats why I call em stealerships.. I never give them business as they all hose you...

I guess it depends on the dealer. My particular one had a very good reputation because we were small and located in a small town. Three techs, nine people total in the whole dealer. I hate stories of dealers that try to bone people because it makes the few legit ones left get an equally bad rap. Off topic though and not my post so Ill shut up now.

Still wonder why the balancers in our cars specifically go bad so often. My Fox's never had this issue, and when I replaced the one in my 95 I used one out of a Fox and Ive had no issues since. Wonder what got changed in 94 to save a few production pennies....

Ya this dealer has like 30 people... My wife actually called me at work to call the service manager and tell them to cut the chit and stop calling her... some chick called like 4 times saying this is bad, that needs replacing...just drumming up business to me...

I get it home throw it up on my lift and see they replaced a factory hose clamp that fell off the radiator line... they actually told me for 480.00 the could replace the radiator.. unbelievable...
