The 4x4 Look...Why?

As I contemplate lowering my 2002, I have to wonder: why exactly did Ford curse the SN95 Mustangs with the "4x4" stance from the factory?

Looking at '05 pics, they don't seem to have it, and the Foxes didn't really....so why did Ford do it to the SN95? Was there a technical reason why this was done, or what? Anyone know?

you can brame all of these SUV monstorasity. Reason why Mustang(or most car for that matter) comes with factory offorad spring is to meet federal crash standards. Because SUV's high ground clearance, manufacture need to raise the veichle hight, so that in case of rear ending SUV, it wont dive under the 6000Lb.+ beast, and cut your neck off(which would be really bad)

Us 99+ guys have the awful 4x4 look also. Not sure why they did this to us.

I've wondered that too.. there really is no point to having the car sit so high off the ground. I have had my car for three years now and still haven't lowered it. After going to a Ford dealer yesterday and admiring the 03 Cobra (almost bought one too), I can't help but wonder why the GT's got shafted. I am starting to consider springs now.. hopefully I can put them in myself no prob. Why are people having such harsh ride quality afterwards though? Does the 03 Cobra ride rough too? My lowered 5.0 had an ULTRA harsh ride. Too bad you can't lower and keep the ride quality too. The roads aren't so smooth around here.

I actually did some research on this and it was a production line reason. The SN95 body was built "taller" in order to clear obstacles in the production lines.

Interesting. Figures it would be something like that. Thanks for the info!

The anti-tunneling explanation doesn't seem likely, as there are plenty of cars that come from the factory with a lower stance/lower hood line than Mustangs. Honda Civics for one, and they're everywhere.

Besides, Ford usually isn't a leader when it comes to proactively addressing safety issues (just look at the location of the Mustang's gas tank for comfirmation of this).

I think in part it's because as part of the recalibrations to improve the ride over the Fox platform they added suspension travel. They had to make space somewhere...

My 02 GT feels very floaty and soft. I suppose I should be thankful given the conditions of roads around here...
