Ive been working on this car since late march and it is finally drivable. After getting some High quality Intercooler piping from stinger, Painting, and installing it.. I can finally Drive it. It runs really good, spikes to about 17 then settles on 15.5 - 16 psi. Thanks again to everyone who gave me advice on this project, i am very pleased with the results. 16psi seems very quick to me so i probably wont mess with it much until i have more parts to throw at it. It is currently Exaust - less so i havent left the back roads (its rather loud) but i hope to get that resolved in the next day or so then start driving the car daily once again. Here are some pics i took today.

Looking good, man! I just got my engine to the machine shop and am waiting for finances to even themselves out before I can pay for it.

Have you tried power-shifting that thing into 2nd yet?

no, i have honestly only driven 10-15 miles. enough to get it all warmed up running like it should. I dont have any exaust yet so i dont wanna piss people off driving anywhere but out in the country. I wanna ease my way into thrashing it, but i have a feeling that once the exaust is on and i start driving it, Ill be a little more agressive with it.
I did notice though how worthless 1st gear is.. put the pedal to metal and your in the redline in an instant!

Very nice Dr.! I especially like how you cut your timing belt cover to expose your adjustable timing gear, it really stands out!

Hear, hear...I started my engine swap the third week of april, and after finally working out MOST of the bugs (just finished converting to blow-through yesterday) I'm finally gonna start actually driving it this week! Too bad 93 octane is $2.30 a gallon

Wimp, been paying 2.65+ for a year now

Good job dr! I suggest you stay off of the pedal until you have exhuast. You have no real way to tell if its pinging with the tone-deaf'en open exhuast
Just a tip, believe me...i wish i had done so !

Really? i would think the open exaust would make it more noticable, but maybe not, I cant go far without exaust. One foot in town i would be ticketed. I do know what pinging sounds like though, and half expected to hear some with reg gas from december in the tank, but so far so good. the AF stays in rich during WOT and bounces while crusing, so it appears that the mixture is somewhat rich. That being said i will probably put prem in it when i do my first fillup. I am gonna wire up the prem switch too to take advantage of the better timing tables.

Pinging (or detonation) sounds like a bunch of rocks being shaken around inside a can.

Sounds to me like you probably got a boost leak somewhere, but I couldn't say for sure. Check all your hose connections and whatnot.

At only 12psi of boost and (admittedly) not the best driving, i can see why your netting 15's. The stock boost on in premium mode (the boost pretty much every 2.3T runs (minus carbs)) is 15psi .
I was running 20 psi (intercooled with 91 octane), i think some higher boost levels would net you some better time.

with the '86 TC setup, I don't have this "prenium" switch right? and I don't have to run prenium fuel in it? but if I do... any difference noticable?

Hey, anyone see any problems with driving around with No exaust. It currently dumps out of the turbo elbow, but i need to take it and get the exaust hooked up and i am not sure if i should drive it like this or if it will cause harm to the 02 sensor or not. Obvoulsly the cops wont like it, but if i drive nice i might be able to avoid a ticket and a tow to the muffler shop.

Depending on what you want done (if you want a 3in down pipe), you may want to order a downpipe from stinger or the likes. Most exhuast shops use crush bend piping and dont have the ability (or dont want to spend the time) to adapt a ~2.25" turbo elbow to a 3 inch pipe.

To answer your question though, no real harm can come from driving without exhuast...may run a little funny if the o2 is seeing oxygen where it shouldnt...but ive done it, think most tf's have

well, for the mean time its gotta be cheap. i wanna hook up the turbo to my existing 2.25" exaust and be done with it for a while. I really want Full 2.5" Duals with a a 3" DP, but i just cant afford it right now. I know what i have isnt the best for perfomance, but if it makes it quieter, it'll do for now. the exaust on the car is only about 3 years old, and its got a flowmaster and no cats, so it shouldnt be too horrible.

I am still saving up for a new mustang, But ill probably keep this one. The feel of the turbo is just awesome add the noise that it all makes.. Its just a much more fun car now. Ill retire this one from DD duties when i get a new one, and just drive it for fun.
