The Boosted Pony Lives!!

Well, I Just went out and G-Tech'd the mustang.. If you dont believe Gtech.. then ignore this, However i DID calibrate it according to Gtech's website.
Its all stock 88 TC block, ranger roller @0*, T3@ 15psi (prem fuel OFF). Volvo intercooler, Baily BOV. I did it on a straight country road, Air temp was 95*.

I think its a bit slow, It feels fast but the time seems slow.. what do you guys think?
1/4 = 15.02 @ 96.6 Mph..
This car is not tuned yet other then what i did intially, and i did get a bit of wheel spin at the start. Is this good? Where do i go from here?

One minor glitch i had was at the end of the 1/4 i pushed the clutch in and the car died, it did not want to idle until i drove it around a bit.. It seems fine now..

That's a crazy trap for a 15.0, but I think I remember hearing that that's kind of a Gtech thing (high trap speeds). Turbo cars feel faster than they are, so that may be pretty accurate.

Brian

Honestly, I think that is right on par/a little high for the mods...

I've found that the trap with my gtech is normally 1-2mph higher than the track and the et is withing a few tenths...the difference is I'm ~.5-.8 seconds faster on a track even on street tires...

i Guess i should have added that the First time Was with NO exaust. Just dumping out of the turbo elbow. I Got my exaust hooked up today, he used crush bent 2.25" pipe, so thats not the greatest, but it only cost me $25 so that i can live with. The car Feels slower now, I havent Gteched it cause i can hear it pinging a little at full boost, I need to burn out the plus i just put in a go with prem i guess. So that time seems on par.. thats good, it must mean things are working like they should. The car runs really nicely, i drove it to work and back today and It really goes well. Kills the on ramps in 3rd.. I did notice a couple things i am curious about though, The bov will sometimes blow on a gear change even if i am not making boost, but instead pulling a low vac. Is this normal? Doesnt seem to effect things much. Also I seem to have an exaust leak, I DID NOT use a gasket on the manfold and maybe thats my problem, What are the Tq specs for it? Maybe i dont have it tight enough. I think soon i will Order a AFPR to see if i can tune out the slight bit of detonation at full boost. Should i get one of those Rail mount gauges, or is a portable better? Next spring i think i will do the exaust.. I can sure feel a difference now that its muffled.

Dr.

Yeah, the BOV will make some noise at 5" of vac or so because they turbo is still trying to blow extra air at the engine once you close the TB, look at it as a temporary boost spike in the IC tubing.

Tq specs for the exhaust manifold are TIGHT as far as I know...I don't think you could break them off with a rachet shorter than 20".

A rail mount gauge is handy...you'll need an adapter to hook the gauge to the rail...I've got 3 or 4 spare adapters, I can send you one for cheaper than summit when you need one.

I might take you up on that, although it looks like the Adapters only cost $9.00 I think im gonna order the gauge and Kirban next week after i get paid. Whats the best place to get a kirban?

Dr.

save your money on the kirban. You would be better off to witha 3in dp over it. Most people end up turning Down fuel pressure. If your pinging at the top end i would do a little self tuning and diagnosis before i upped the fuel.

What plugs / wires are you running and what are they gapped at?

boost level?
Octane?
Fuel-pump?
vacuum/boost leaks?
Injectors?
Intercooler?
Timing?

Higher back pressure can cause pinging aswell...

Most people get away with 15 or more (in my case 21+) with preimum gas (only 91 octane here). So you have some stuff to do before you throw another unknown into your equation ;)

Edit:if your on a stock fuel pump...that would be the first thing outa there! :nono:

Well the reason i am getting AFPR is because my current regular leaks a little bit, the vac line that goes to it will have fuel vapor in it after you run it. It doesnt leak much, but it does leak. As for the rest of the specs..

plugs / wires? Motorcraft for both, Stock gapped AGSF32c's
boost level? 15psi
Octane? 90
Fuel-pump? Stock Mustang
vacuum/boost leaks? None found.
Injectors? Browntops
Intercooler? Volvo Front Mount
Timing? 13*

My pinging seems to have gone away, i think the problem i was having was that the car sat after being run for a few mins. If i go from cold i can drive around all day with no problem (ic pipes are warm, but not hot) However if i stop for a few mins, the IC pipes become so hot you cant touch em.. then it pings. When i get the regulator i will probably just set it at stock until i am ready to upgrade some other things.. I just want to make sure i have a good regulator. As for exaust... I need a whole new system, but its something that isnt in my budget at the moment. I can imagine the difference a downpipe can make, the differnce between No exaust, and the 2.25" i have now is dramatic. I think after the AFPR i will do the fuel pump, then exaust next spring.. I need to get some control arms so i can get the tc rear installed too.. So many parts.. so little money.. I am open to advice though.. what order would you do it in? the only reason i would do exaust last is because its gonna cost the most.

I think the pinging problem is related to you running 13 degrees of base timing...the 87-88 TC ecu's run 10 degrees base. Also keep in mind that timing is harder on motors than boost.
hmm, i was thinking 13 was stock.. I may have to back it off a bit if the pinging comes back, While on the subject though, Do you know any good source for an Allen or Torx type of bolt i could replace the Dizzy hold down bolt with? Its always a pain to get a socket down there.
