Whenever I get that 'Oh.' disappointed sound after telling someone its a 4.6, I always explain that the 4.6 made the exact same power in the same rpm range as the 5.0 when it came out in 96, and in 99 made an ADDITIONAL 45hp, and now makes even 40 more than THAT!

Combined with better fuel and emissions efficiency..let that tired 5.0 rest.

I used to do that, but now I usually don't bother explaining it to them. 9 out of 10 times I'd get some know it all ass-wipe who wants to argue about it and swears up and down that 5.0L's came stock with 300hp and all that's needed to see 400hp is a fancy air filter and a "chip"

Ehh, fuel economy is a wash because both are within 1-2 mpg of each other. Yeah, the 99-04's make 35 more HP and 0 more lb ft! The 05+ makes 75hp more and about 20 lb ft. Not exactly ground breaking considering the 250+ lb lighter, 225hp/300lb ft, iron, truck headed foxes made their debut in 1987.

The 96-06 Mustangs haven't made the performance impact like the 5.0's did. The 5.0 pretty much brought the Mustang back from near extinction and it was THE car to have for a long time. Heck, the 5.0 established a cult-like following and gave rise to performance companies and even magazines devoted strictly to them.

Not really trying to start a debate, just trying to put things into historical perspective. It's like someone born in 1935 arguing with someone born in 1965 about who is better --Willie Mays or Barry Bonds (pre steroid allegations).

I have only had my 02GT for 3 weeks and I have been asked 4 or 5 times if it is a 5.0. I also have an 89LX 5.0 and everybody seems to think it has about 450 hp. When I tell them it has 225 hp they can't believe it. They also can't believe the 4.6 has more hp than the 5.0.

I get asked a lot too. And yeah it does seem like people think the 5.0 had a ridiculous amount of horsepower! You tell them a stock 4.6 makes more than a stock 5.0 and they don't believe you. One guy was so dissapointed when I told him I had a 4.6, kept shaking his head back and forth and says "It ain't fast but at least it looks good" with head still shaking.

I get it all the time too and i own both a 5.0 and a 4.6L.

I always get asked in the GT "Hey is that a 5.0?" and when i say now it's a 4.6L they say "why did Ford put a smaller engine in the Mustang " I don't even bother explaining to them that the 4.6L actually makes more HP and TQ than the 5.0 ever did (minus the Cobra)

But then when i drive my 5.0, and someone asks "hey, is that a 5.0?" (while totally missing the 5.0 emblems on the side) they always give a positive reaction and say "Wow, it must be fast. I don't know why FOrd went with a smaller engine in the new Mustangs"

Now, us Mustang enthusiasts all know the difference between 5.0's and 4.6's and how some modded 5.0's can mop the floor with 4.6's and how modded (or stock) 4.6's can eat 5.0's for breakfast. We all know this so lets not stir the waters....but...

To the general public, the 5.0 Mustang is king. Ford is missing out on a huge marketing opportunity. Dodge struck gold by bringing the Hemi back (even if in name only) and shoehorning them into everything they have. If ford brings back the "5.0" in 350HP form with cylinder deactivation technology and puts them in Five Hundreds, Mustangs, the new Lincoln Mark 9, Falcons, Trucks, you name it...they could hit gold just like Dodge did with the Hemi

True, but how long was the Hemi gone before it came back? The 5.0 has not been gone that long, I think once the OHC reaches it's peak which is about now(Unless they come out with a 5v or 6v!!!), after a few more years they will bring it back. This is of course if FORD is still in business.

It's like being in Game 6 of the world series on the brink of elimination with your ace pitcher due up for game 7.

No point keeping him on the bench unless you are going to make it to game 7. Gotta win the battle before you can win the war.

Ok hopefully that made sense to someone. What i was getting at is that Ford needs help now and if bringing the 5.0 can help from a marketing standpoint now, then they should do it.

And in 30 years we could all be driving around in 600HP 2.5L V8 Mustangs that can run on E85 making fun of the antique 4.6's.

I get asked "Is that a 5.0?" a lot.. but most of the people usually ask "which is faster?" and they're mostly older people

A bunch of guys at the place I work at are chevy guys, so they give me a hard time about "the little 4.6L SOHC" in my car.. altho I know they're kidding, because they've complimented my car many many times haha.. but still, it would be BADASS to see the 5.0 badges back on the mustangs with a nice 5.0L (OHC or OHV) in the mustangs.

302 in the LX's... 351 in the GT's.. and 429's in the Cobras... Now THAT would be badass

If it wernt for the 5.0, I wouldnt be here. My uncle had a new 88 gt vert when I was 8. red with red interior. I was sold. And when my buddy got his 95gt when I was 16, I was re-enlightened.

I always liked Mustangs. It was mostly for the looks of them and when I was in 8th grade I talked my friends mom into letting me drive her 96 v6 auto Mustang and that felt so fast being the first car I ever drove Then about two years ago a guy I know gave me a ride in his 97 Cobra which looked amazing with Cobra r's, lowered, Rio Red. The thing is still mint today, but that thing has a H-pipe so it sounded nice too. The thing is crazy fast and that is what got me into the performance side of Mustangs and not just the looks. That got me into Mustangs even more, But I was 15-16 years old and couldnt afford one yet. Then I met a friend who had two 5.0's and started learning about 5.0's and wanted one really bad I had almost bought a few when recently I found my 96 GT with the 4.6. I must say I dont regret getting a 4.6 at all and if anyone would have told me a month ago I was going to be driving a 4.6 Mustang I would have laughed at them because I was set on a 5.0. I do plan to buy a 5.0 when I can afford one but do plan to keep my 96 forever

Ford is missing out on the marketing opportunity of a lifetime by not boring the 3v 4.6 to 5.0l. The 5.0 is synonymous with Mustang and the thoughts of a new 5.0 would attract buyers. Give it about 325 - 350 bhp and make it the base GT engine and offer an LX package as well. Then offer a N/A 4v 5.4 in a Mach 1/Boss/GT350 package with at least 375 bhp and gobs of torque. The Ford GT heads should get it there easily. The 2008-09 refreshening would be the perfect time to launch these with the Camaro and Challenger coming out.

I dont wanna turn this into a LS1 vs 4.6L thread, buuut

It is always funny when me and my chevy buddies get into a dicussion and I bring up the point that the 05 4.6L made the same HP stock as a ls1 that had 67cuin more displacement. they never have a comeback for that

the 4.6L has always made more HP per cubic inch than any of it's v8 counterparts.

Time go's on, things change, technology has made available 300hp 4 cylinders, most of which kill a stock 5.0. But, in my mind it's unfair to compare something so new to something so old, and if they really want to, then they have to compete with the aged 5.0 and it's aftermarket, period. If not for teh 5.0, no civic, no integra R, none of that **** would be like it is. Oh how 5.0 begot civic. Or better yet, the import craze period.

I own the best of both worlds I guess, except that I have the 2V not 4V, but i'm used to it...For me, it's a matter of ford always making an engine with tons of potential, but then, starving the **** out of it and selling it. Every mustang should come with a mmff magazine on the passenger seat....
Anyways, i'll take my 4.6 over the 5.0 any day, I like the hp up from 225, and naturally, if you have a 4.6 your car is probably not OLD lol...
They're both good engines, they both last forever if not abused wrongly, and, well yes the 5.0 is king. Import people to this day compare their cars to them....I rather think it's ignorant, but, oh well.
