Got everything for my gt40p h/c/i except a cam. What kind of gains should I expect? I'm going with p heads, exploder intake, crane race gold 1.6's. I'm thinking a tfs stage 1. Is that the best off the shelf cam for this? Steeda no 18? I dunno, what do you think?

My buddy's numbers with a 100k+ mile 302, Typhoon intake, X303 cam and GT40Ps made 257hp/292tq at the wheels. The X is a good cam but the TFS1 is a much better cam....anything with a split duration favoring the exhaust will do you a lot of good with those heads.

I had those GT40p heads w/matching headers, exhaust, cobra intake, 1.7 rockers, stock cam, pullies, BBK TB-65 or 70mm, stock block rebuild with a clean port on the heads and intake and 373 gears and SPEED DENSITY!!!

No dyno numbers but went to the track 2 days after I had the motor in and tuned.. Went 13.4@ 105 on street tires. Full street car/daily driver at the time. I liked the setup and I got the heads, headers and intake as a package deal from MM&FF advertisement. Local speed shop did the block for me and a buddy put it together for me.

May do something similar with my 87 Gt vert... OR go with a fresh 351 w/ zero miles that is sitting in my buddies garage.

Nope. The cam is made for 1.7s .512 lift

I believe Central Coast sells a longblock that has the X cam and P heads in it they list it at 340 horse. The P heads have smaller valves than E7's and an X cam clears on a stock longblock.

Either that or it's the change level, but I doubt it. It's probably performance or production. Who knows...

BTW, even though the P heads have smaller valves, they still flow better than the standard GT-40's, E-7's, and '70 Windsors. They are an excellent example of port velocity vs. valve size.

The P heads do not have smaller valves than the E7's. The E7's have 1.78/1.46 and the P heads have 1.84/1.46 i believe. The regular gt-40 have 1.54 on the exhaust side.

Also never just assume that there will be adequate PV clearence. Its not about max lift its more about duration cams with more duration and less lift have a better chance of kissing a piston than a higher lift cam with short duration. Clay all the way!!

Do want to bust your bubble but thats not that much of an accomplishment, changing the cam in a speed density car and having it run without mass air is an accomplishment and it can be done but is a pita. Just changing the heads and intake on a speed density car is easy, its the cam change that makes it hard

Only the exhaust valve is smaller on the Ps, and it's smaller because the exhaust port has better port velocity so a larger valve is not needed. That said, if they had gone with a 1.90 intake valve they probably could've put a 1.60 exhaust valve to good use.

I never said it was an accomplishment... Just did not feel like switching over to mass air. A buddy of mine put a e-303 cam into his 88 Gt w/SD and did not run into an ounce of trouble, even with the tune.. I found out after the fact and I wasnt about to swap cams.

Car ran well and like I said I may do a similar set up with my 87 Gt vert... BUT this time use the e-303 cam with the setup..

the gtp also has a slightly smaller camber volume for higher compression an relocated spark plug for a more efficient combustion. explorer intake an tb are good to pick up but avoid the cam. its a truck low rpm torque cam.

my friend runs ported P heads and ported cobra intake and a mild cam. it made 260 RWHP i think on a mustang dyno. its a strong running car on the street. really has some pull to it.

My 93 p headed combo is a pretty strong runner. If I can just get some time and get rid of that dang stock stall converter I can finally get some better times out of it. So far best NA pass is 14.0@100 mph with a crappy 2.25 60'. I can't launch it anywhere near its powerband with the stock converter. A new 3000 rpm stall converter and I should be able to squeeze some better times out of it. Not bad for a full weight GT vert AOD car.

We just had a guy on our local forum dyno his combo, which i don't have all the details yet but when i get'em i'll post them up....he made 292hp and 332tq...that's on a bone stock Mountaineer long block with a stock HO cam and even the stock Mountaineer valve springs, and they said power was dropping hard after 5400RPM so with better springs and a cam this combo should easily pass the 300hp mark. That's pretty outstanding for a junkyard engine.

My buddy had a very similar setup and he ported his heads and ran very high 12's, but with a stock cam I believe.

Engine Might have to get a Dart block but don't want to and if I do, then 363 instead of 331. Thoughts on what I've already bought so far.......
