It's a leaky bastard right now, lol, so maybe. I would think based on how the impeller is pulling the fluid and pushing it would be affected if the ports are not oriented correctly. I dont think it would be detrimental unless you were at the limit. I am tempted to get the correct cover though.

This how I see it, at least in cartoon version, the missmatch, if it is in fact a mismatch, may be made worse by the discrepancy in gaskets causing the leak. You may catch a break using another brand of gasket that seals, not better but different.
As for if the difference in passage shapes causes flow differences, I don't know. I do know I would want the passages to match.
Your problem appears to be the seal between the cover and the block, I would guess there is a crack someplace in that area, get a cover that has the correct passage orientation and see if that works, eliminating two possibilities.

Sorry for stirring the pot and them waiting so long to chime back in. The picture of the front of your engine is the one I was referring to. I've found several places, including Rock Auto, that also list the same style (rotation wise), for cars that I know to be reverse rotation pump cars.The cover you posted from Jegs is the one for standard rotation. It's a Jegs house brand, not Edelbrock. It's a "one size fits all" hodge podge evidenced by the drilled but plugged boss for a front dipstick tube. Edelbrock sells a specifcally reverse rotation cover. As you've found, there's a ton of variations in a SBF timing cover and it can real confusing, real fast!

You're right about the mounting face to the block and I apologize for causing the confusion if that's where you're sure it's leaking from. IMHO, it certainly could affect cooling. I'm a firm advocate of doing something once and doing it correct. Admittedly it's not mine but if it were up to me, I'd locate and install the correct one. Yeah, I'm OCD that way!

Regardless of intending to replace the cover with the correct application, I'd still check the old one to locate the leak source. As already suggested check for cracks.I'd also recommend a straight edge across the gasket surfaces to see if it was warped. Laying it on a piece of glass would be ideal.

It did not hurt! Now I've got to figure out which one I want buy. Honestly I think you can get away with either one. But even though it makes my head hurt if I think about it to much I do understand flow. Either will flow, but the correct one will flow better. Even with the plate on the back of the pump, that has round holes in it, the angles are wrong.

Any of you guys have experience with these?

You may be able t o get one at a parts store, auto zone shows that Dorman part number. Try rock auto too

I was really just concerned with the quality of the part. It didn't have 5 stars on Summits site, but it seems more like the people that rated it low were complaining about a mistake they had made. Like it was the wrong application for them. Which really isn't the parts fault.

Something I just noticed. Where my ground wire and the bracket that holds the wire going to starter are both bolted to the timing cover where a mechanical fuel pump would mount. I agree with the earlier comment that I should probably move the ground wire, but the bracket for the starter wire looks factory. The timing chain covers that are made for reverse rotation dont appear to have a place to bolt that bracket to. Where then would I mount it? Maybe someone with the proper cover can take a picture of their setup. That would be nice.

Mine has the same bolt holding both.

OK, cool. Still bolted to the timing chain cover. The units I've found so far appear to be completely smooth with no bosses for bolting anything to it. I'm going to keep digging. I'm headed out of town as soon as I get off work, so it will be Sunday or Monday before I get a chance to look at it.

The factory ground and the wire bracket are bolted in the same place as above.

@JKWilson61 What did you use to look up the cover on Rock Auto? When I look it up it gives 2 options. One is a Dorman for $100 and the other is sold out. Also, they appear to be standard rotation covers. There is a shop near me at specializes in Fox mustangs and parts. I'm going to try to find time to call them and get their opinion. They might have an OE cover that I can buy off of them. Hell, I might even be able to trade in my existing cover. It does fit a Mustang engine just not a Fox.

I took the Dorman number from the Summit listing you posted and entered it into the "Part Number Search" tab on the main Rock Auto Auto screen. There's a box for the part number and below that is a drop down list of manufacturers. Just scroll down and Select "Dorman" and click search.

Whisnant Mustang FTW! They have an OE cover that is powder coated silver for $75. I think I would rather have that than a reproduction. They also have a fan shroud. I plan on meeting them after work one day this week and picking both of them up.

They are really nice people I've been by their shop a few times. I plan on using them when it comes time for heads and intake stuff. I'll probably get a set of seats from them at some point.

Always nice to have a supplier nearby. I'm fortunate to have one I deal with, though it's a 2 hour drive. He literally has acres of Fox bodies, primarily Mustangs followed by Capris. He's always had whatever I need and for reasonable prices.

Ok, I went to the mustang shop this afternoon to pickup my parts. Dude hands me the timing chain cover. It looks exactly like the one my car. We start talking and he says that's what is supposed to be on the car and that the other way is standard rotation. I show him pictures of my thread. He starts pulling other covers. They are all the same. I asked about the covers with only one post for the ground wire. He grabs one same thing. He said the one post thing was a 92, 93, 94, 95 thing and some of the 94 and 95s had no post. You all know what my cover looks like. This is what the one with one stud to mount the ground.

And the part number

I've actually got a 289 hanging on the stand in the shop. I'm going to take a look at it later. Here's a couple pics of Roger's mustangs that happened to be at the shop today.
