Thermostat Help

Hey guys,
I just bought a new 180* High Temp thermastat from Napa today but I don't know which way it sits in the thermastat housing. My factory shop manual says something about the "pellet end sitting in the intake manifold part of the engine." Anyone know for sure which way it goes? I have some pics for reference. I found out i should have bought a new gasket too when I hooked everything back up and all of the coolant started leaking out of the thermastat housing:damnit: I need help ASAP as I need the car running by friday....after we win our homecoming fball game

See the first pic with the Bimetallic spring in plain view?

That end sits in the intake manifold, and as the coolant in there heats up it allows the spring to do its thing and open up to let it flow. If you put it in the other way.... well....

You do have the rubber gasket that seats in the chrome Tstat housing right? That sucker is definatly needed.

I never had any luck with the chrome one I bought. Just gave up and painted the orig.

Put a little dab of ATV Silicone on there just to be safe. Also, run a string through the T-stat and out the housing as that thing will move on you. You can undo the string when everything is in place.

you know what else helps to hold the stat and gasket in place, for this or any other gasket you have to hold in place is 3M super 77 adhesive. Just spray a lil bit on the housing and the stat then set everything how you want and install on the manifold. Adding the adhesive really makes a good bond and keeps your gasket in line while trying to install.

anyone know which direction the thermostat sits in the first picture?? For example...the two clips in the north south position or in the east west position. The shop manual says it has to be in the right direction for it to work properly.

If it helps, I used blue RTV sealant to hold the gasket and thermostat in place while putting it on the intake.

It's just been my experience that chrome thermostat housings don't hold a seal real well against an aluminum intake for some reason.
