Things I learned From Stangnet.

I've been here for about 3 years. Over the past 3 years these are the things I have learned about the 4.6 L 2 Valve Mustang GT

From 99 - 2001, the proven N/A mods were: Air Filter, gears, Shorty Headers, X or H pipe, Cat Back, Timing adjuster, Larger MAF, and pulleys.
Mods that were questionable were Cold air intakes and throttle bodies and chips.

From late 2001 to the present: Bullit Intake manifold, Intake plenum and throttle body, long tube headers, plasma booster, and P-51 Intake Manifold.
These common bolt-ons have resulted in 99 + GT's with 255-275 RWHP. 300 RWHP is all but impossible in a N/A 99 and up car without head work and cams.

Then there is Forced induction. Vortech S-Trim, Paxton Novi and ATI :Procharger are the most popular. With a safe tune allot of cars have between 350-400 + RWHP. In the beginning, these superchargers required a dyno tune and a piggyback Chip.

Later came the Ford-Cosworth-Steeda Technology Transfer program. The Tech Transfer Program allows the tuner to reflash the car's ECU instead of using a chip. The reflash results in more power and a safer tune. Testament to that is all of the Cobra Killers with 400 + rwhp on stock internals.

Now there is the Kenne Bell TwinScrew Super charger. There are a few stangers here on stangnet that are posting impressive numbers with the Kenne Bell superchargers.

Nitrous, I have not paid much attention to Nitrous. I know there are dry kits, wet kits and now there's a direct port injection kit. A proper tune, window switch, Wide-open throttle sensor, remote bottle opener, and bottle warmer are popular with Nitrous set-ups.

There are also a few turbo kits available for 4.6L Mustangs. There seem to be a small number of Stangers that run turbos.

96 – 98 stangs benefit from the same mods as the 99 and up cars. The most beneficial mod for these cars is the PI head swap. 99 and up stangs are equipped with PI heads. Many 96-98 Stangs with the PI Headswap are posting more impressive numbers than the 99 and up cars.

That's about it. I'm sure I am missing something.

Cool thread :nice: I was getting kinda tired of searching all the time to make these same observations before buying my new mods. Thanks :hail2:

Read the new 5.0 Mustang magazine. You will find that 1/2 the bolt ons for the 4.6L are useless. It breaks down how much power you get from just about ever bolt on part there is. And you will find that you will pay hundreds of $$$ for only 2hp. The Bullitt intake manifold is over 1,000 bucks and will net you a few rwhp. Is that worth the money? It is on a supercharged car, but not N/A. That plasma Booster (when it works) adds a couple HP and will run you 300 bucks. But ive heard too many stories of cars not even running once its installed. There are really only a few bolt on parts that will give you a decent HP/TQ increase throughout the powerband and that is the T/A-pulley combo, MAF & longtube headers with an aftermarket exhaust to match. While you can spend a couple thousand more on parts and gain 10rwhp, its not worth it IMO.
Companies sell cams for our cars, and while they will add decent power, they cost around $400 a stick and then you either install it yourself, or pay someone to do it. So right there you are talking approx $1200 total. Bolt on GT's will not get you over the 300rwhp mark...... for now. The only way you will see 300+rwhp on a GT is with cams, ported heads, and all the forced induction out there on the market. I am more entertained by reading whats going on over there on the 5.0L board. I think my car is maxxed out with bolt ons. To be quite honest, im bored as F working on my car, and its a 2002. There is really only 1 solution to the Mustang GT power problem, and the answer is forced induction or what those high school kids call nawwwwwwsssssss.

In the Bolt on vs. FI war, there is no comparison. You can spend $3000 (including bullitt intake) and end up in the high 200rwhp range. Or you can spend $3000 and have an easy 400+rwhp. And from there, you can just tune your way to 500+hp.

Hey what was the topic of this post again???? Ive just been rambling on about nuttin' :)

I wussed out and traded for an 03 Cobra.
However, easy and relatively cheap power for GT Mustangs comes from the centrifugal supercharger kits available. Modding is a big part of the fun, though. Just start with a plan when you begin to mod your car. You'll spend more wisely and get more power for your dollars.

I've found that the most notable improvement was when I traded my Mustang in for a Corvette! :rlaugh: :rlaugh: :rlaugh: :spot:

I agree. Although I did go with the Steeda pullies and and Timing Adjuster, I plan on sticking to Mods that generally go along with a Super Charger. For example, my next mods will be Suspension, Sub Fram connectors, 3.73 gears and an aluminum driveshaft. I will stay away from exhaust for now because I am still not sure which exhaust I want to go with. Full exhaust, (long tubes, off road pipe and cat back) will help with a Supercharger, but I haven't decided on a mid-pipe. Out of all of the mid-pipes I've heard, the Mac Prochamber sounds the best. The sound of a prochamber with 2 chamber flows is hard to beat. I had a pro-chamber, then sold it before I installed it. :bang:

My suspension choices will also determine if I get long tube headers or not. There are allot of inclined driveways here in Atlanta and I do not want to get :owned: by one of them.

Cobra Brakes are also part of my plan.

wanna know what works?

pulleys, t/a, o/r pipes, 4.30 gears, suspn that suits your needs (drag or handling). thats it.

if you want to go further then get a Bullitt Intake, LTs, cams, custom tune, aluminum f/w, aluminum d/s, cut weight.

most (if not all) of the mods you see in magazine ads are a bunch of BS.
