for your non-turbo application there, Id suggest a 5.0 block so you get the benefit of a roller cam (w/o the expense of a retro kit).

For your 550-600 HP app, that is beyond a stock-block IMO. Look at a Sportsman block or other aftermarket-type block, which is serious $$$. Otherwise you are looking at hi-grade internals, stud girdle, and lots of prayer.

I agree with slapper. The blower is just as driveable as a turbo. The hp differences between turbos and blowers is WAYY overplayed. All I know is that with barely 10lbs of boost my 396 stroker made over 650rwtq and over 650 rwhp before it snapped my tremec in two on the dyno. When I turn the wick up on the novi to 20 lbs I expect over 800 rwhp!! The car has WAYYYYYYYYY too much torque and horsepower for the tires as it sits!!

Go blower..... much easier in a 66.

the 289 block has a higher nickle content than the 302 block for strenght the changed because it was to expensive to keep making the affordable with so they lost the extra. ive also been told if u punch a piston through a 289 block u really messed up bad and u probally shouldnt own a liscense anymore.

Just curious as to why a 351w swap is not on your options list. You are obviously not concerned with a sleeper look that a stroked 302 could give you. IMHO the 351w gives you the same displacement as the 347 stroker and is a motor designed for the displacement. It fits in the engine compartment without mods. There are loads of performance parts. It should be much cheaper than a stroker and if you get a really big itch, you can stroke the 351 to ~400 ci.

I've seen 351's stroked all the way up to 414 ci. The 351's make decent power as-is. The 331 is a decent street motor, the 347 is OK for street, a little more race-inspired, but the 351 is ideal. Power, and it has the cubes that it was meant to have, therefore the motor can handle it way easier. Plus, there are tons of add-ons for the 351. Almost as many as the 302.

(I'm talking about the Windsor 351)

you can acually go all the way to 454 with the 351w block, and i have seen 427 windsors here locally, that's a little too big for reliability in my opinion but hey just think" wow man nice stang whatcha got5 in it?" "oh it's just got a 454" "why the hell would you put a chevy motor in a ford are you stupid?" "hehehe, you moron it's a stroked 351" LOL

with the right block u can stroke a 351 to a 454, or so ive heard bvut those blocks cost a lot of money but also on the up side the are aluminum so they are lighter.

Regarding why I wont go 351, hehe, just read below. But it sure is gonna happen sometime, just after I get out of school and can do the weekend warrior thing. Right now I love driving it every day, why else live in Florida?

Haha, that just made my day. And it backs up what a few shops around town told me the other day. Evidently the 289 block IS stronger after all, so I guess I will be using it.

Here's a progress report *warning...I change my my mind as money comes or goes lol*:

I have decided to put the stroker on hold in favor of a turbo 289. I really like the idea of keeping my already bad gas mileage but having the boost on demand whenever I want it. There's something cool about having a 350-ish+ hp car that gets 19-22 mpg. Keep in mind, I have college to go to, and sadly the mpg is a factor here, I really wish it wasn't. The stroker would just murder my gas mileage, and I don't even want to know how bad it would be with a turbo, lol.

However, as of this typing, the turbo itself will be put on hold for a little while. The 289 will receive a rebuild, fresh set of trick flow heads, a holley 4 barrel, weiand intake, headers, ignition, brakes, and a rebuilt t-5 FIRST. Drive that combo for a while, get my ass whooped a few times, then go turbo. I'm already contemplating how I'm gonna run the piping and headers, oh boy this is gonna be fun.

On another note, I found a 1986 lincoln town car with 41,000 original miles. One owner, 5.0 EFI, auto (duh), and I talked the guy down to $500. I don't know if I want anything from this car though, I don't think any of it fits my application save for the 302 block and maybe the EFI?

Also, a local guy says he'll sell me a rebuit t-5 with no miles on it, with the bellhousing, cable clutch, slip yoke, and some other stuff I forget. I can have that for $500. I'm sure it's a deal, so I'm gonna pick it up this week sometime.
