I was at a light and this guy pulls up in an 03 GTI VR6, He revved and all I heard was a BOV so I said what the heck. Light went green and i spun all of 1st but still had him by a hair, hit 2nd and I pulled very slowly, hit third and thats where i jumped out on him but about a length and a half or so on him and shut it down, i didnt wanna go to crazy, he pulled up next to me and gave me a thumbs up and he said "I only got 4 cylinders" I said yeah i have 150k and No boost, I asked him how much boost he was running and he said 20 psi. 20 psi seems kinda high for a VW does that car have a stock turbo? And if so how much boost is stock? Whats should that car run with 20 psi?

I know with an chip, boost controller, and tune those cars are quick, probably 13 second range. Nice kill, ive always noticed my car pulls on other cars HARD after 3rd gear.

Did a little research the 4 Cylinder GTI has 180 HP Stock, 6 banger VR6 only has 200 HP and its slower in the 0-60 cause its so much heavier, i still havent found out the stock PSI though

the boost is usually 4.5-6. I had a buddy that swaped ecu's with a euro one. Raised his boost to 14# and put a 3'' exhaust from downpipe back. He ran a 12.7 @2700'

I met a guy today (kinda lives next to me) with a nice VW.....I can't remember what it was but I think it was rare. 1.6 with a factory S/C he's pushing 16 psi and tuned to the max he said....looked like a Cabbarello (spelling) but that's not what it was. Had a motorized wing on the back it was actually a kick ass car. He told me he had a 93 GT vert that he drag raced before this car. He said with bolt-on's I would take him untill the twisties lol. cool guy and sounds like he know's his stuff about stang's aswell

nah the VR6's are 6 cyl non turbo, the GTI's are 4 cyl turbo. 20 psi isnt overkill for them out of a small turbo, should run mid - low 14's.

Really...

My friend has a 20th anniversary GTI with a larger K04 turbo, front mount, turbo back exhaust, diverter valve (BOV valve) and an intake, and his car at best is a mid to low 13s car. If all he had to do was that and run high 12s at that elevation, then why did he waste his money??? I think theres either more to it than that or he is pulling your leg.

But to think, 20 psi (on a decent sized turbo) on a VR6 would lay waste to a lot of the cars here!

There could be LOTS of reasons why. I'm sure you know that already. The two things that jumped right out to me are the ECU he mentioned and the fact that a smaller turbo will reach it's output potential quicker than a larger one will.

The point is that you already know better than to zoom in on one item of a mod list, say that your "buddy's is bigger" and assume that the statement made is false. After all... it's all about the combo ain't it?

That is such a BS excuse "i've only got 4 cylinders".

They try and make it a lose/lose situation for mustangs corvettes and camaro's.

Almost like, If a v8 wins, it should of, so no congraduations necessary, all you did was waste gas.

And if you lose, they have a celebration, and now half the internet that drives POS 4 cylinder cars thinks they can take any muscle car.

I've had a guy say that to me before, and all i replied with, was "not my fault you let your little sister pick out your car".

yeah the old "i got 4 cyls" thing is gay. my friend in his mustang raced this civic one day. This kid was one those ***s that thought the civic was the ****. My friend kicked his ass of course. Then the kid went" that car is pretty quick, it must really help out with 4 extra cyls" what a ***.

i dont get this fast import stuff. Even teh newer stuff, with HP numbers over 200 WOW. it has the stock HP of a mustang, but half the torque. HP is just the figure. When you race from a stop and the feeling you get when the car accelerate is TORQUE! not horsepower. You have to have torque to get moving.

I think its cool that a STOCK 5.0 still is potent and still eveyone compares things to them.

and the imports are JUST STARTING to catch up 19 YEARS!!! after these cars came out. lol funny to me.

Im not trying to fight it or anything, I would just like more info. My friends GTI is quick, but I doubt anywhere near 12s (sure doesnt feel like it would hold its own with my car). He is just the person who researches things online, and then buys and I think if it was that simple to run high 12s, he would have gone that route.

I have a LOT of VW friends, but actually dont know all too much about them. Im sure on that 12.7 car there is more to it than exhaust, boost and an ecu, which is what I would love to hear (a mod list). I know altitude doesnt affect boosted cars as much as a N/A car, but its still a factor. Also a 12.7 on 18" street tires, is a lot different than on 15" slicks.

Oh well, if you can grab a mod list from your friend, and if an ecu and exhaust will go 12s, I could probably talk a friend of mine into going that route with his VW!

Alright after talking with more VW people and doing my research... A stock turbo even running upwards of 20 psi (18, with a spike to 20 or so) with all the other goodies, they are only running low 13s at best. They seem to trap 102-104 tops without a larger turbo, and I doubt a FWD car is going to pull the 60' needed to run a 12.7 on 104 maybe 105 mph trap.

I like to know what his car actually has done to run 12.7s @ that elevation as it is a really good time. Might be able to help some of my VW friends run better times. Again not doubting anything, just saying there is a LOT more to his 12.7 than an exhaust, ecu and more boost.
