i just wanna start this thread by ------------> :bang: :bang: :bang:
I just recieved 2 e-mails from both VTengines and mustangtuning. They both told me , that i WONT be able to tune the VT stage 1 cams on my car all by myself. I told them I will NOT BE ABLE to take the car to a dyno. (NO DYNO around). This is the reply i got :

You may be able to send the Xcalibrator to a shop with a dyno, but tuning it yourself is out of the question. The cams will not give enough benefits without a dyno tune.

Bob

MustangTuning.com

and this is VTengine's people :You may be able to tune the car in to idle with those software
packages,
but it may take some time to get it dialed in. Dyno is always the best
way, but sometimes its just not possible.

NOW what can i do....can someone please HELP me , I really want the stage 1 VT cams. BUT it seems i cant get them.
:fuss:

thx
P.S. dont mention anything about going to a dyno. It wont happen. any other solutions please

Contact modulardepot www.modulardepot.com , mustangtuning doesnt do tuning. MD is where i ordered my sct excalibrator 2 with tune for vt stage 1 cams and headswap. If you get the excal 2 then u can also datalog and send md the logs if you have issues with idle, and they can look at it and make adjustments to your tune. You really should find a dyno though, at least so that you can get your A/F checked out.

I dont understand why they would tell you that? What are your other mods? Do you have a blower or something? If not, I dont think everyone that has installed the VT stage 1's have had a tune since. I could be very wrong here, but I think you should be fine with the stage 1's w/o a tune if you dont have any other major mods.

checking A/F wont be a big problem I can always get a wideband O2

I read somewhere that you wont get FULL gain out of the VT stage 1 unless you get a tune. Some forums stated that a 22HP can be gained from the Stage 1 cams without a tune. And 33HP after a tune.

Someone asked where i live? well I work here in the gulf , so the dont have dyno's here , the closest is about 8 hours away. And those people dont have much experience , I wouldnt trust them with my car.

my .02. buy the pro racer package. cost $795. the new one inclues a dataloger. this should take care of any idel issues.

as far as not recievign the full benifit most people have see 15-20hp without tune. then if you ever want to tune just by a wide band 02 to go along with the pro racer package and you can nail you air fuel and your idel.

The total cost to be your own tuning station is 1k. now that sucks but if there is nobody around you.

you could also just buy the wideband 02 and a mail order tune from like modular depot or something. if you sent them a graph of the air fuel you could tune the car in via mail I am sure.

but how, to get accurate readings not just a/f but any flat spots and power dilvery you will need to have the engine under load, so you may be able to get some readings driver down the road with bits of equipment attached to the car but with out a dyno there is no way you'll know whats going on.

Don't get me wrong, it really sucks but I can see why and agree 100% with the answer you got from the engineering companies.

I mean how will you be able to tell whats happening at 4000rpm in half throttle repsonse and WOT, you can't just stick the gear in gear on axel stands as the engine will not react the same with load on it.

third or 4th gear pulls will be good enough load I am sure. you can run a wideband will you are driving. you may have to break the speed limit for a bit but it would not be impossible.

Bottom line if you can't get to a dyno you can't get to a dyno. there are ways to work around it though.

yes , thats what I need . a way around that. I'm actually getting to the point where I'm actually thinking of opining my own dyno shop :(

all you can really do is get a good guess, but even running the car up and down the road you will have no idea what it is really doing you will only be able to go by feel. Which is ok, this is how they used to do it, but with the multitude of tuning options available with modern electronics it will make you job a lot harder.

At the end of the day, if you slap all the bits in there and tune it conservatively to make it safe it should be ok. And just hope that you don't come across any major problems.

i just drove 3 1/2 hours to get on a dyno to get tuned.. its definately worth it over just the generic tune they give you. plus its cool as hell watching them make the tune lol. if you're tuning with sct look at their website to see if there's somewhere close you dunno about

I went thru this about 2 months ago. I will speak from experience. Some may disagree. You will only be able to get maximum, similiar to stock, drivability by getting either a dyno tune, or deal with a programmer/dealer who has experience changing the parameters in the Advantage software on tunes where cams are involved. I would venture to say that NO ONE will do an adequate job by just evaluating your mod sheet and spitting out a tune for you. Since no dyno is possible, you will need a guy who can get his hands on the car and datalog it with either a Raptor or an Xcal2. As said before, Tim at MPH is excellent and probably your best bet to get a tune e-mailed to you, if you have an Xcal1, Xcal2 or chip because he has done so many 99 and up cars with the VT cams. The great thing about the Xcal method is that you can describe over the phone what the car is doing, and a good tuner can e-mail you changes to the tune to work out the issue. If all you did was install the cams, and didn't change your MAF, it may not be too bad. I had to have a Lightning 90mm maf and the Comp Cams 268's all dialed in together, combined with the fact that my car is an auto so the shift schedules had to be developed to my liking as well. As far as AFR....it would be nice to get a wideband meter and weld in a bung before your cats to use it. It would really help when you datalog to know what you have because it will affect other things. This has been the main issue for me with "road-tuning". Changing one parameter can affect others, so then you have to make another adjustment on something that you thought you were done with. It drove me crazy. That is the beauty of the Dyno. You get everything set to work harmoneously and achieve maximum power from your set-up. But, the way I did it was 1/2 the cost also. I know that my tuner has experience with cams now because of me, so if you need a name or number, PM me. He is in Virginia.

the gulf? thats a pretty big region. maybe be more specific and someone may be near you that you didn't know of.
unless that goes against your witness protection program rules?

FIND a dyno and take your car to it if you want them that badly. I dont really see any other way around it. Hell some people on the net drive 150miles away just to get a dyno, you unfortunately might have to do the same, especially if you want your cams. I would recommend doing a LOT of mods to your car now, and then going to get it dynoed and tuned somwhere. This way, if it IS a far trip, you only had to do it once, and you have a lot of mods on your car that are now dialed in and your car is tuned, and you will be all set and wont have to do that again anytime soon.
