Those with 2000 cobra r brakes

Hello I have been considering upgrading to this setup for a while now. I have cobra calipers now and after every track day I have to rebuild the calipers because there is nothing left of the dust boots. I also require a more rigid caliper, for pad wear issues and pedal feel. I have been reading that I can reuse my current braided cobra hoses with the brembo calipers. Is this true? I see that buyfordparts.com has the calipers and pads only. I want to know if I can just buy these parts and not the whole kit. Also, what kind of pads does the kit come with? This is very important to me because I dont want to pay for "high performance street pads" that I will just set fire to and toss out on my first track day. Also, does anyone know if anyone sells these calipers as a set w/o pads. I ideally would like to run pads of my own choosing.

have you tryed ceramic pads?
and what kind of track?
are your rotors slotted?

i wish i could afford cobra R brakes.

you don't need the kit.

i reused my cobra hoses, and the calipers bolt right up.

the pads that come with them are very similar(if not the same) to ones that come in an EVO. they offer a bit different feel, but never fade--at least i haven't gotten them to.

Are they a carbon metallic, semi metallic, ceramic...? Anyone know. I have set pads on fire at the track and its not fun. They pulled me off the track immediately and made me drive around the parking lot for like half an hour to cool them off. If you dont cool them off, they can reignite when you park the car and burn it to the ground . Ceramic pads are a joke, they wont take the heat of a race pad and since ceramic is a very good insulator they dont dissipate heat very well (since they dont absorb much) leaving your rotors to do all the cooling. Slotting is also a joke, unless you run really crappy pads that gas out or you dont bed your pads properly, cross-drilling is even worse as it further reduces the strength of the rotor. Currently the rotors are running up to about 1250-1300 deg F. (measured w/ hi temp color change paint), I need a pad that can stay with me at those temps, or possibly slightly less with the brembo calipers as the pads are larger.

Sorry one more question, do these calipers have quick release pins that allow you to change the pads w/o taking the caliper off? Because then I may just start swapping pads at the track, in which cas a street type pad would be fine.

Yea I saw you and bimmertech posting this stuff in another thread. That was the route I was gonna go. So does anyone know if you can change the pads w/o removing the calipers?

What wheels will fit with the Brembo calipers? I have 10th anniversary wheels will they work on my car?

Part of me thinks that you can change the pads without removing the caliper. I thought i heard that somewhere but i am really not sure.

Judging by the flat sides and 2 holes on the top flange of the pads and the lack of side and piston clips, I would have to say they are more than likely the drop-in style.

Yea, I called carbotech and they seem to be familiar with the calipers and they told me they have removable pins to pull the pads SWEET!. Its also pretty obvious from the pic you put up 1Tall MF. Carbotech does not recomment mixing and matching pads from other companies especially with theirs so I'm gonna have to dump off the pads they come with to sombody, since buyfordparts.com wont sell me the calipers only. Any takers for OEM cobra pads? Thanks for the help guyz.

Oh and I am mistaken...Apperantely the panther plus pads i run now are of a ceramic compound. So I take back what I said about ceramic pads. :Zip2:

The only oem ford wheels they work with are the 2000 cobra R, 98 cobra, 95 cobra r, 2003 cobra...see the pattern here (that I know of). I am pretty sure they dont fit the bullit wheels, I think I read that somewhere. But if you wanna check...

heres a pic of what you need to do. The thing is the calipers are really wide...so you could maybe run some wheel spacers if you have to..not recommend but if you must .

Yeah there was a local guy with 17x9 bullitts and he couldnt use them with his brembo upgrade.

Cheapest price ever for the cobra brake kit. Buy your SS hoses from them or elswhere (since the kit does not come with any) and the total kit cost w/ hoses is only like $800-810 dollars. You really cant beat that...

Well I guess I'm going with the standard Cobra brake upgrade. That saves me a couple hundred bucks!

Nice i just installed my Bullitt brake kit. with stainless braided lines. Looks freakin wickid! I just still need to bleed the system and im good to go.

The Brembo's? Yes, 4 pistons, solid mounted as opposed to a floating 2-piston design. They use the same 13" rotors and lines as the Cobra/Mach1/Bullit kits, so someone who already has the Cobra brakes can upgdrade to the '00 Cobra-R brakes by bolting-in just the calipers and pads. The install should be just about the same as for going to the standard Cobra brake kit.

I just thought of a question for those who have the Cobra-R kit: Do the calipers have to be shimmed at the spindle mounting points to center the pad gap over the rotors? I recall that the Alcon/Roush 14" big brake kit required this for proper caliper alignment.
