Those with Aftermarket Cam Covers on 99+ come in

Ever since I put the BBK cam covers on mine, it's REALLY gone through the oil. I checked the oil last week (the dipsticks on these cars SUCK btw . . . ) and it appeared on the LOW side. So, I put a full quart in. This was after I put a half quart in about 1,000 mi ago. [Mobile 1 5w20 syn]

Today, I changed the oil as it's 3k after the supercharger install and . . . 3.5 quarts came out! OMG . . . this could have been a real issue. Especially considering that I took it to the track Friday night! The car never smokes when driving, but it did start smoking on start up about 500 mile ago. I built the home-made oil separator kit, but it fills up to the bottom of the filter within minutes of driving it. The oil is obviously being drawn out via the PCV system.

Looking at the inside of the pass. side valve cover, it is obvious that Ford is smarter than BBK, as they have a baffle completely surrounding the PCV valve. I'm going to pull the cover off tonight and put the stock valve cover back on to see if this cures the problem.

Anyone else have this problem with aftermarket covers?

Well, I don't personally have experience with aftermarket valve covers, but I have read of other people having oil consumption problems when installing them, and others having no problems at all. It seems you're taking the best course of action on this one, let us know if replacing w/ stockers fixes your problem. Good luck.

Got the pass side cover off and the stock one back on this evening. They're a PITA to get the BBKs in or out - tighter than a nine year old nun . Now I'm waiting for the wife to come home so she can start the motor so I can do leak inspection, etc. More news later.

Edit: OK, this solved the problem. I'll swap the drivers' side another day . . . I'll advise BBK of this problem and see if they have a fix. It's a darn shame not to use these covers . . .

BBK's are junk!!! They don't seal properly...ie; not provision in cover for the gasket to set properly.

I have the Team Breed Covers with no leaks at all.
You are not the first to post this issue with the BBK covers.

I would disagree that they are junk. The covers are nicely made, the gaskets worked extremely well - never had the slightest leak on either of mine - they just need some baffling.

I've got bbk's installed and have an oil leak on the passenger side. That one will be coming off tonight and the stock one going back on.

I wonder if a shield or something welded inside it to cover the pcv valve (like the baffle on the stock cover) will help keep it from sucking down so much oil.

No real added functionality that I can think of, other than loosing some oil.

I picked them up when I got my Patriot heads... I read this article: http://musclemustangfastfords.com/tech/0405mm_pats/

which says:

The only downfall is that Patriot uses truck heads, which require truck valve covers and the tall truck cam covers may not fit on your Mustang.

At the time I figured the bbk's would be on the safe side. I didn't realize the heads I had stock were the same already...

It absolutely would solve the problem. Problem is that the one used on the stock valve cover is shaped differently as the PCV valve is in a slightly different spot . . . I haven't had the chance to talk to BBK yet - maybe tomorrow.

you could take a different method... you diagnosed the issue.. would it be possible to refab your seperator with a bottom drop line to drop the oil BACK into the cover/oil pan/somewhere. thus reusing the oil instead of it filling up and being useless? kinda like how people did for the KBs on cobras.
