thoughts on a mini spool?

I know i know.......

they wear the tires more.....not as nice going around corners......hard to turn tight

I've dealt with this in a 4x4 F350 before...


anyway...other than the above gripes, is there anything else i should know about? Being on a college budget, i REEEAAALLYYY want that locking rear end, but i was cursed with a 8" rear

are there any of you guys out there running a mini spool? how do you like it, or what are your thoughts.


I guess my car doesn't see a whole lot of inner city-turning corner driving, so I'm not as concerned with that. and I'm not buying Yokohama's for my car either!

I wouldn't bother buying one . . . just make the stock open a lincoln locker.

I had a moser mini-spool, and thought it was a very good improvement over the "one wheel peel".
I would do it again for a weekend warrior type car, but not for a daily driver or anything you want to handle well in the turns.

welding them can be very dangerous if it break. A good weld is pretty much impossible with how impregnated the metal is with oil. I run a full spool, not the mechanism to adapt to a spool. But I love it. I makes it a bitch to turn low speed, turning radius worsens, but I haven't burned one up yet.

For a strip car a spool is fine, but even then I hate them. Push a car with one by hand and need to make a turn and you will find out what a PITA they are. LOL

I recently installed a full spool and the above pretty much sums up my street experience. Works great on the highway but sucks at slow speeds with hard turns. I understand that they are not good to drive in wet weather, but I tend to avoid that anyways. Mine is a weekend play thing that sees lots of track time and lots of street time and so the spool is acceptable to me. I wouldn't want one in a DD though.

I also agree with Blown65 as you will not want to push the thing with the wheels turned unless you tend to turn green and bust out of your shirts when mad. j/k

that's how you can stop the car too if your brakes go out

You don't even need a block/emergency brake to stop the car on a hill, just turn the wheel

haha, never thought of that. I'm probably changing mine to a spool when I change my gears.

I ran a mini spool in a street car and it was no big deal. It drove different, but not bad. They are cheap too. Check your local round track supply.

ill let ya know how i feel about mine this weekend i'm installing one right now in my 8"
it was the numbers that got me to do it ~45bucks for a minispool and moly cross pin vs ~400+ for a locking type rear, it would be nice if someone made a full spool for an 8 though

thanks! I'm actually thinking about designing a mini-spool type locker with a slot and pin that would allow it to turn ~3/4 of a rev. before locking in. That way it wouldn't be such a PITA around corners. I'm drawing one up now, and I've got the CNC equipment available here at SDSU, so I'll run it by an ME and see what they think.

use a 6011 welding rod if you go to weld them spiders soild, 6011 = deep penetration.

well i got mine in and so far so good, just takes some getting used to hearing the tires making noise every time i turn but other than that its alot better than the one wheel wonder that was there before, id say go for it

I dunno if there is a difference between mini spools and full spools but my dad has a full spool in his Camaro and that thing is a PITA to drive. Long sweeping turns, slow movements, car hopping and bouncing on sharp turns (maybe that's the DR's...). Sure in a straight line it'll lay two even blacks but not worth it in my opinion.
