I've decided to do this right and build a solid motor first (i'm burning oil) before getting my supercharger. Got a rough quote from a local machine shop today. Wow. They had motors EVERYWHERE. Anyway, give me thoughts on this work/cost. I've recieved good references for them (one a 400hp Chevy 350 and the other head work on a slant six 70' Duster) I'm shooting for 275hp on motor..and another 120-140 with the blower.

Short Block Stuff
Block cleaning - $35 (I am getting a garaunteed rebuildable block..and they said they'd check it for cracks but i don't know if that's enough assurance)
Bearings installed - $25
Cylinder Bored .030 - $96 ($12/ea)
Pistons pressed - $40
Misc parts (bearings, plugs etc.) $100
Misc cleaning - $25 (may be using some used units..not sure yet)
Short block assembly - $125

Total shortblock somewhere between $1400 and $1800.

I don't know what brand pistons but I'm figuring on $500 or so for forged units and they quoted me $195 for eagle rods..but I haven't researched much in the way of rods so I don't know if that's a decent price or not)

Heads (prices are total prices for BOTH heads combined)
1 piece valves - $150
3-angle job - $125
Exhaust Porting - $150
Intake Porting - $75

Total Head work approximately $650
Don't know what lifters yet so I haven't figured in that cost
I'm sure this wont be set up for the most flow from stock heads but like I said, i'm not looking for THAT much power out of the n/a motor. I'd like to be safe and keep total hp around 400 since I'm using a stock block.

Give me some opinions guys. The shop seemed clean and well kept for what I expect a maching shop to look like. (First one I'd been to) Let me know what ya'll think. Oh, and what's more restrictive on a stock motor..the heads or the intake?...i'm probably gonna have to use my stock intake for a while, sigh.

Thanks
Eric

I would just call another machine shop. If the prices are somewhat close you are golden.

The fact that the guy comes highly recommended means alot.

Another sign of a good machine shop is that they will have a lot of motors heads etc. laying around. It shows alot of people want THEIR sevices.
