throwout bearing question

Hey guys. Of course i have a squealing throwout bearing. I have heard that some people remove a cover to the tranny and spray some white lithium grease on the TOB. I was wondering if anyone could give me some specific directions on how to access the cover or any other information...Thanks, Ryan
 
There is an plate that covers the clutch cable on the tranny, remove that(easy, it's like a couple small bolts) then you should be able to spray the TOB from there. At worst you might need to have the Clutch pedle pushed to the floor and locked to get better access, I hope ayway. :D
 
With the front of your GT raised up (jacks or ramps) crawl under there and follow where the clutch cable goes. It either goes into the access cover or right by it (I can't remember offhand) but the cover is a silver-colored stamped sheet metal box-shaped cover that is held on by a single bolt. I crawled up under my 02 GT to take a look and that's what I saw though I didn't remove it. I guess once you take the cover off you should be able to see the TOB though I'm not exactly sure where to apply the grease except to make sure not to get any on the clutch or flywheel. Maybe someone that's done the procedure can give some more detail. The access cover is hard to miss though, it's kind of on the side near the bellhousing.

My TOB has been making noise for some time and I've already taken it into the dealer who couldn't reproduce the noise even though the service writer heard it. Funny, it was real quiet for about 2-weeks afterwards but came back with a vengance. I suspect the lubed it to keep it quiet. Anyways, I bought a Steeda quadrant and firewall adjuster but haven't installed yet. I was thinking of installing them and adjusting a little preload on the TOB to keep it quiet. Anything to shut it up.
 
While we're on the subject, does anybody know what the exact problem is? I'm talking about the symptoms of when you hear jingling/squeeling that goes away as soon as you put your foot on the clutch pedal. Is the TOB bouncing around on the input shaft, clutch release fork, or pressure plate fingers?

I just, JUST replaced my clutch so yeah you have most of everything right you discribed. you will be able to remove the access cover and fairly easily get at the TOB. I shouldn't be to hard to miss the Clutch and Flywheel with the spray but maybe I am thinking in terms of the tranny being on the floor,lol.
Let me guess the squeeking your hearing from the tranny just kinda comes and goes at odd times. Mine used to do that a long time ago, they stop doing that after a while, The greese should make it stop being anoying alot sooner :D .
 
I have the same exact problem. It is always sqealing, ever since the 1st day after installation. It will stop with the slightest touch of the clutch pedal. The more I adjust the cable at the firewall, the louder the squeal gets. The clutch pedal also magnifies all kinds of vibrations. Is this fixable with lithium grease and if so, what would happen if the grease came in contact with the clutch, pressure plate, etc?

Mine does the exact same thing. I figured its either the throw out or pilot bearing. Anyone know if this is a problem (ie: things are breaking) or just another mustang quirk?
 
I had a 2000 v6 mustang that did the exact same thing. I took it in 4 times because they kept telling me they couldn't hear the noise. We finally complained to the quality manager and they replaced the clutch cable and fixed the problem. Now, I just bought a 2002 GT and it's making the exact same noise. I took it down there and told them what it was doing. They called me later and said they were going to replace the pressure plate and either the throw-out bearing or the pilot, i can't remember which. I'm going to pick it up tommorrow, hopefully it's fixed.
 
I have removed the tin housing and sprayed lithium grease on the TOB and shaft about 3 times since the car was new. The noise always comes backin a month or so. I guess it's a design problem with the TOB, but as long as the clutch is working , it is just an annoyance. Next time , I'll just hit it with real axle grease.

If your throwout bearing is making noise it probably needs to be replaced. I had the same noise coming from my t.o.b. and I just replaced it. ( Actually ford service dept. replaced it, I had some previous warranty work done only 4000 mi. ago and they put a new t.o.b. in then so it was still covered under that warranty work.) Noise is gone. It is a $25.00 part plus whatever time for the labor cost, unless your mechanically inclined to get under your car and attempt to do the work yourself. I wouldn't start spraying grease or oil somewhere you don't want to and cause further problems. If it really is your t.o.b. making the noise you will have to replace it at some point to get rid of the annoying squeal...
 
Yeah, well, removing the trans and clutch to fix a noisy TOB is a waste of time. Even if the car is under warranty, the car would be down for a day or so.

The clutch plate faces the flywheel and is covered by the pressure plate, so I fail to see how a little grease will contaminate the clutch face ?

"Waste of time", not sure what that means? You would rather drive around in your car making noticeable bearing noise that you can fix? My car was in service at 8a and out by 5p. Big deal, it's better than driving around with your car making noise from your tob which will only get worse in time. It depends on where you put the grease and if it will work. What I'm saying is if you don't know exactly where to put it you might be putting it somwhere you don't want it to be and cause damage to something else in the process.
 
When I took my GT in for the chirping TOB the service writer heard it but when I picked it up they said that the tech couldn't hear. Sure enough it had "mysteriously disappeared". Uh-huh. Well it was quiet for about 2 weeks anyways. I suspect the tech adjusted the clutch mechanism to put more pressure on the TOB to keep it quiet. It was noisy as hell and it was too much of a coincedence for it to just disappear like that. It's still making the noise now (louder too) but I'm hesitant to take it to the dealer since they don't seem to want to address the problem seriously. From all the posts I've read about the issue I've come to the conclusion that it must be a design flaw. Even people that have new TOBs installed have the noise return. I tried the lithium grease solution and that didn't seem to do much. The only thing that keeps it quiet for good is putting slight pressure on the TOB so I think I'll just install the Steeda quadrant and firewall adjuster that I've got sitting on my workbench and be done with it. :shrug:

I'm with you. :lol: If mine starts to make noise again I will just install a new quadrant and adjuster as well cause I've had the tob changed twice. I agree that there might be a flaw in design or bad oem parts coming from ford?
