I have read about thumper heads. Now, instead of sending my heads to them and having them send me a set of their famous "thumper" heads, would it be smart for me to just have my local machine shop whom I know well (and is the best around) shave my heads, which will add a little compression I am told, and port and polish them, and use the appropriate valves and springs (performance enhancing) because thats what it seems like thumper is basically doing anyway, and it just seems like the same. I dunno the differnece. Any help, because seriously contemplating thumper, but its alot less convenient.... and either way, I WILL have my heads or those thumpers... cant afford TW's (want them bad but cant) so please take 2 minutes and post your opinions.. ThANKS!

The thing is that Thumper does a lot of E7 heads....it's sort of his specialty. That's the difference between him and your local guy. If you are comfortable with the your local head shop then go to them. Not all heads are the same and a guy who sort of does generic port work might not get the most power out of a particular head that another porter does almost exclusively. Any reputable shop will make you some extra power. If its such a tough decision go by price.

well i think about it, should I spend 100's more for an extra 5-10 horsepower? Just by gtting the thumpers, or should i just spend the 400 it's gonna cost, and maybe even get really good results by my machinest?

Or you could spend "only $400" and get heads that don't flow any better or make any more power than the stockers. I would just get the Thumpers. He knows what he is doing. Does your shop deal in strickly Ford Mustang related parts?

hes cheap cuz hes my dads friend. Anyway, these GT-40Y heads, whats with the letters after GT-40, what is the difference between GT-40P and Y and turboswirl and **** - and are these 700 dollar heads fully assembled? or are they bare, and the shipping cost - (not really that much probably, couldnt be more than 100) I'll check it out..
Thanks

GT-40 (cast iron) GT-40P (cast iron) GT-40Y (aluminum) GT-40X (aluminum)

The regular GT-40 heads came stock on 93-95 SVT Cobra's and some Explorers. The GT-40P's are a slightly better version of the GT-40's and came stock on 5.0L Explorers after 96-97 I believe. The GT-40Y is an aluminum head and flows slightly better than the GT-40P iron heads.....but you save 50 lbs. off the front end. The GT-40X heads actually flow fairly well (on the intake side anyway) They're about the same as the old Edelbrock Performer heads.

nice , thanks, do the gt-40Y's flow just as good as thumpers??? .... I am leaning toward thumpers right now. I like the aspect of looking stock when you arent.

I ran thumpers for two years. If your going to get aftermarket alumimum heads, get either AFR or TFS's. Thumper heads, besides gaskets and new head bolts, that is all your going to have to buy. Thumper's served me well and I am kind of regreting selling them. I have TFS's now, but don't have a motor to put them on. My car on a worn out motor, almost full weight GT, on 40 series back tires ran 1/8th = 8.4 at 85mph with a 1.8 60ft launching off idle. I had a B cam on 1.7's, Edelbrock performer intake, 70mm tb and 76maf, and full exaust.

Dude, check out Power Heads before you buy Thumpers, the Powerheads are CNC machined and are probly the best E7 head out there. I dont know how good Thumpers are, but Powerheads are worth about 40 RWHP with the stock cam/rockers and a ported H.O. intake. You can check out them out in a project car on MM&FF's site. Dont get hand-ported stuff when you can get premium CNC work! Think of them as an iron version of AFR 165's

I was gonna buy a set of them but went with TW's intead, just saved a little more money... ok more than a little, but when I pulled them out of the box it was well worth it!

From what I have read, Thumper's heads are pretty badass and flow pretty damn good for a budget stock E7 head, and I know I will be going with his heads when I do my rebuild this winter in the quest for 300rwp! :) If you are going to be going more radical and wanting more power down the road, you might want to have a set that flows more something like the TW or AFRs
