Heya fellas-

I've been considering swapping to an electric fan of late and I've heard a lot of talk about the 3G alternator. I have a '90 T-Bird (Not an SC) that's got fried heads and transmission and is on its way to the junkyard this week. Is the stock Thunderbird alternator a 3G or is the car too old?

Thanks!

No, it is the same as the 87-93 Mustang. According to www.car-part.com , the 3G did not start in the Tbirds until 94. Almost any 94 up 3.8 engine has the 3G alternator, but some of the 94 models only had a 100 amp version, I understand. I have one from a 2002 Mustang V6. The 94-95 GTs had them, as well as several other Ford vehicles.

I use www.car-part.com a lot to find cross references for parts as they use the Hollander interchange manual.

i am using one off of my old 91 5.0 t bird and it looks totally different than the 87 gt alt. that was in my parts car. it had the grey module instead of the black one,it had an internal fan too. plus it plugged right into my 89 ex 4 banger notch. it has 2 plugs plus one stud. the 87 had 2 or 3 plugs though.

It looks like there are several different alternators for the TBirds. But none of them are the true 130 amp 3G ones until the later models. The 90-91s I saw were 65 and 75 amp models on www.car-part.com. The 75 amp one is the same as the Mustang one.
