Timing Chain on my 347 Stroker Not Right

Guys,

Take a look at this picture. I'm NOT a mechanic and had this lower end put together for me. When I installed the timing chain on it the dots don't line up exactly right. I wanted some opinions on it before I go further. This is a B50 block with a Probe 347 kit with small base cam.

its deffinently off a tooth.. pull it back off and turn the cam gear slightly and make em line up..they need to line up unless you are degreeing the cam

you say the short block was not done by you, did they retard or advance your cam? the marks should line up. Ask whoever did the cam install if it went in straight up. Then back it off a tooth

Oh boy, I hope I don't sound too stupid with my reply

If you mean pulling the timing chain (cam gear) back off and turning it, I thought it was set to the cam (by the dowl pin (sp)). Or do you mean pull the CAM itself and turn it one tooth clockwise in this case?

I will give the builder a call and see if he did this on purpose.

Check with the engine builder first to see if there is a reason why they installed it this way (looks like they retarded the timing), but if you want to install it straight up do the following.

You need to remove the bolt that holds the top gear to the cam.
Pull the entire timing set off.
Rotate the top gear clockwise until the the dots are facing eachother and place it back in the chain.
Then reinstall the timing set.

I updated the picture because I'm just being really stupid I guess but when you guys are referencing rotating the top gear I'm assuming you are meaning the "timing chain" gear attached to the cam. If you notice in the pic there is a dowl pin that goes through the gear to the cam so I cannot turn that gear to a different position.

(go ahead call me an idiot I deserve it) hehehe

No your not an idiot, it means your timing gears arnt able to be advanced or retarded. There non adjustable, it really isnt off by much, if your really worried about it, get yourself a new timing gear set. Good luck

It looks like you just need to turn the engine over backwards a few degrees and then check it. It looks to me like it's not exactly on TDC. Guys, look at the 2nd picture again and compare the mark on the bottom pulley to the main cap or oil pan rail. It's not centered. Also if it was a tooth off it wouldn't be lined tooth to tooth, it would be a full tooth off. You can tell by looking at it that it's not advanced or retarded a few degrees because there is only one keyway on the bottom gear meaning it's definately installed straight up.

I'm with Eric on this one, looks like the motor isn't exactly at TDC yet, and it is not possile to be a tooth off with that timing set. Is the #1 piston at the top of the bore, do you have a piston stop or a dial indicator?
