May sound dumb, but whats involved in removing the timing cover. Never done it with the engine in the car and the oil pan on the motor.

Do I need to remove the oil pan, or can I just pull the cover off? I already have the whole front of the engine apart.

What are the torque specs for the cover bolts if any?

Thanks in advance all -----

U gotta drop the front lip of the pan...its probably about 6 or 7 bolts on each side going back that must be loosened to allow the pan to drop.

Im not sure of the torque specs right now.

You can do it without dropping the front of the pan. It's a bitch to break loose the timing cover, though. And you can take the timing cover & water pump off as a unit as long as you only remove the bolts that actually go into the block. There are three that only go through the pump into the timing cover, and they'll hold it on and maintain the seal.

Water pump does not need to be removed. Absolutely no need to do so.

On the timing cover, there are exactly 12 bolts. The 4 that run through the oil pan into the timing cover. The (2 on the left & 2 on the right) of the timing cover that run through the water pump, through the timing cover and screw into the engine block. One on the right side, that is perpendicular to the rest of the bolts, only holds something on and does not screw into the block either.

The bolt in the top middle does not screw into the block. The 1 in the middle left and the 1 in the middle right also do not.

Yank the balancer, loosen the 8 bolts on the timing cover, get a HUGE pry bar and pry the crap out of it until it comes off. It will be severly stuck, and will take some serious prying.

Try using something to gain leverage. You may need to set up some aparatus to do that, like 1 pry bar as the fulcrum, and the other to pry the timing cover.

I have removed and installed my timing cover 4 times, so believe my words.

Thanks guys. Just wanted to be sure it was on there so tight. I got all the bolts, but that sucker didn't want to budge. Figured I would ask before going at it. I guess I just need to eat some wheaties and get crazy.

Again, many thanks. Just wanted to powder coat something else while I was in there.

I am assuming I need a new gasket to install when I am done!!!!!!?????

12-18 ft/lbs for the timing cover and water pump bolts. Use thread sealent on every bolt thread and the bolt itself. Take the water pump off. You'd be stupid to not change the pump gaskets while your there.

You don't drop the oil pan, just remove the 4 bolts under the pan that bolt to the timing cover.
