timing question

what normal behaviors of the engine with timing different from stock
what i mean is, is the power really noticable if u advance or retard the timing
and when u change the timing does the computer do anything different, could it ever act weird when u change the timing?

Thanks

most folks advance the timing. the factory sets it where it can run in any temp extreme on crappy gas, and not detonate.

advancing it can make it a little less sluggish, but you have to listen for detonation or pinging. back it off if any is heard.
every motor is different, so there is no magic number. things like carbon build up, etc makes some people keep it around stock settings.

also, your SN is prone to detonation - those guys have a lot of problem. one reason is the snout of the car does not cool stuff off as well - heat leads to detonation. also, your puter is really finicky compared to fox puters.

more timing normally can lead to pinging, and that is about it (also might run a little hotter). what is your car doing?
my two cents.

no, the difference isn't going to be all that much at all..

i had as much as 15* advance (15 initial)---5up from 10 to clarify.
when i was running my stocker engine NA.

on the nitrous i run it at stock or retarded, but i DO notice a pretty big loss from 15* to 8*

from 5 degrees advanced to 2 retarded, i noticed it pretty good.

I was wondering because me and my dad were trying to set it back a bit cuz the pinging was really bad when i bought the car and when i marked the balancer i marked the wrong spot and when we lined up that mark the thing just didnt rev fast at all prob(5 sec for it to rev up, i dont know that it was at but that was a bad timing spot) then we moved it which looked like 7-8 degrees and left it there cuz we had to go home (all the tools r up north where we work) and then a week later i wanted to have my dad look at it and see if i marked it wrong because it had really bad perforance (toped out at 105 :nonono: ) and he then found the 0 degrees and 10 degrees marks and we found that for the past week i was running it on 2 degrees. :bang: so we put it at 10 because we only have a small amout of time to look at it and then we had to go back to work and 10 seems still a little sluggish compared to where i had it when i originaly got the car

Also If i pulled the negative wire for 30 sec and put it back on how long do u think it would take for the computer to reset itself and get back to normal?

until the next time you disconnected the battery. :) you probably need to disconnect it longer to discharge the puter memory.

just get your timing light and do it right. get to 10*. then try a couple more degrees till it pings, then back it off a deg or two.
good luck.

This may sound like a off the wall question, but will adding a more free flowing exhaust affect timing? I just installed BBK 1 5/8 headers, 2.5" Bassani Off-Road X-Pipe, 2.5" Magnaflow mufflers, 2.5" Mac Tailpipes. Since installing the exhaust I have to turn the ignition over twice to start it, as where before it started the first turn of the key. The timing is at 15* right now

i dont think so, unless it is a heak soak issue from your headers - need to provide more info on what the car is doing (im not sure i follow what 'turning the ignition over twice to start it' means).
good luck.

 Let me try to describe this the best I can so bear with me. When I turn the key in the ignition it makes a noise similar to when you try to start a Automatic car in "D" but immediately starts when I turn the key a second time with no issues

unfortunately, your analogy is lost on me also (ive never had an automatic and would not try to start it in drive). im not being a smarty - i dont know what that means - hopefully someone will articuate that sound/feel.

what is the noise? like a clicking?

what happens the first time you crank the car?
