Tinting windows on a S197.

Is there something special I or my tint man needs to do when tinting my son's '05? A Stangnet member said something about whether the tinter adds the Felt strip or not. What felt strip are we talking about?

Okay someone educate me here.... what's the deal with "Felt"? I know what it is, but where and why would you use it in conjunction with a tint job? Color me confused...

It keeps the tint from getting scratched. Over time, without the felt a lot of people (including myself) have been getting small scratches on the tint from the window going up and down. A felt strip solves this problem.

it is commonly referred to as "moleskin". it is a soft fabric that goes in between the glass and the interior door panel felt strip. without it, the tint WILL SCRATCH!! i called all over about a year ago when i had the tint done. no one local had a clue about the moleskin, and "never had any issues with the 05+ mustangs". well, my tint is scratched in many places. it looks the same on both sides, so it is an engineering problem, and not simply dirt in the seal. i will take some pics when i get off work, and show you what i mean.

there is no issue with the "window drop" when the door is opened for the tint installer to deal with. it is the exact same way with many high end cars. any experienced tint installer will be able to install the tint without a hitch, as far as the "drop" is concerned.

don't know where all you guys are located, but i have been going to the same tint guy here in NC for about 4 years now, and he has done a total of 16 vehicles for me, none of which ever scratched, whatsoever. he has never installed a felt strip of any kind on any of our vehicles. if you are getting scratches in your tint, chances are the tint is no good. ask them what brand they use before you pay for the tint job. trust me, quality tint is the only way to go. just for a reference, the tint my guy uses in Johnson Window Film, and it's warrantied thru him for life, so ask around. there should be no reason to add anything to a tint job.

on S197s its different. you are rolling the dice if you dont install the moleskin. my tint is not warranteed for "damage", only defects/installation.

Hmmm..... Is this a problem which is specific to the S197 cars!? The windows on my '02 GT and my '03 Cobra are tinted and there was no addition of felt or moleskin to the doors. I have no scratches.

My guy uses 3M tint. Seems to be pretty scratch resistant.

Yes, it is specific to our year vehicles...for some reason Ford decided not to put the "felt" or "moleskin" on in the interior window strip. This sometimes causes foreign particles (sand/dirt/dust) to "stick" to the plain rubber/vinyl inside window weather strip, which in turn scratches your window tint (regardless of the brand, but I always use Lumar). Here is a place that sells the kit, I'm not affiliated with them, it's just the only place I've seen that sells the kit (of course a good tinter could cut it himself). not to be harsh, but Llumar tint is not very good quality, with over 16 vehicles tinted in less than 5 years, i believe i can speak intelligently on this. i have had Llumar on other vehicles before, not by the guy i use now, but before him, and it SUCKED! always scratched and actually turned colors on me.

U.M., here is one scratch. they are very hard to photograph. look at the line near my middle finger, that is a scratch. there are many more, but this one photographed the best. it did take quite a while for them to appear. i thought i was safe for a long time.
