Tips for learning how to port.....

Ok I dont feel like spending hundreds of dollars on porting and I got a cobra intake on the way, as well as some GT40's

who can give me reference to some GOOD manuals and what not to learn how to port a cylinder head and a cobra intake

what are some good tools to use and where would I get these?

can someone tell me of what all is needed?

probably alot to ask but hey this is the Tech Section and Ive gotten all my other knowledge from this site

i think S&2B's site has some info on it toward the bottom of all the linkies.

if you only wanted a lower ported, i think it is tough to beat having Tom do it (considering your expenses for time and tooling). but you are more ambitious, so........

IIRC, some of the performance books touch upon porting.

good luck.

I am also looking to do this same thing...i have an extra intake manifold thats goingon the motor im building this winter. All this port and polish stuff seems very easy. It seems to me if you just think logically about the possible bottleneck areas in all the runners and just smooth everything out and blend it nicely. What gains will you see by porting the stock upper and lower? thanks for the info

i dont know 1/1000th of what Tom knows, but i know enough to feel it out. there are many intricacies to porting. a buddy in here had Tom port his lower and he had nothing but AWESOME things to say about the entire experience. and the price was sure right (IMHO). knowing this, that is my angle on what i recommended earlier. i would not hesitate to have Tom do my work - it would be cheaper than the tooling and research (and he has only done a ton of them - he knows all the ins and outs). my two cents.

Thank you Hissin. There is an art to porting - an intake or a head. You get the best of both HP and torque by taking matrerial out only where needed and by reshaping the runner walls for better transition to the head. If you do it yourself, you probably won't get the same results as letting me do it, but there is a great deal of satisfaction in DIY and I support guys who want to try. I'll give you guys a tip, if you know a mechanical engineer that designs HVAC duct systems, talk to him about how high velocity air acts in a closed duct system - what it likes and doesn't like when making turns. Listen, think and apply what you learn.
