tire size for 18X9.5 wheels please

Don't know about a better price on the wheels, but I have 18" x 9.5" wheels in the rear on my car and I have 285/35R18s. They are a perfect fit and keep the speedo correct. I have Sumitomo HTR ZIIs from Tire Rack. I believe the rears were $177/ea when I bought them.

03MustangGT: why use a shorter tire in the rear?

nickthegenius: i've heard of using a skinier tire in the front to avoid "grabbing" the road with the front tires. do you have any problems with your car pulling into ruts in the road?

i'm thingking of
265/35/18 for the front
275/40/18 for the rear

is it a good idea to go to a shorter tire in the front and will the wheel to fender gap be larger or smaller because of this. thanks for the input.

by the way, the factory '00 cobra r uses the 18X9.5 wheel with 265/40/18 all around

275/35/18 is NOT a shorter tire than a 245/40/18. They are identical in diameter. People don't realize that the middle number is a PERCENTAGE of the first number in the metric rating.

your speedometer is set to 275/35/18 which is the same height as 245/45/17.. 285/35/18 is like .3 inches taller than a 275/35/18. 275/40/18 is quite a bit taller than 285/35/18. Your speedo will be off.

For the front I run 265/35/18.. Its great for a 18x9. For 18x9.5 I would run 275/35 so I would have some if any rim protection against curbs.

It depends on whether you want the tires to last longer or not. With the same size all around, you can rotate the tires.

If you went 265/35/18 all around, your speedo would be off by a little less than 1 mph. You would actually be going a little slower than your speedo is reading. Do a search on this, I can't remember where I found it, but somebody posted a link where you can type in the tire size you want vs the stock tire size, and the difference in speed as read by your speedo as well as wheel rotations per minute will be calculated.

Its a bad idea to put a 245 sized tire on a 9 inch tire, let alone a 9.5. That tire is way to small for that rim.

i like the staggered look so i run a slightly thinner tire in the front (265, and 275 in the back), so I personally would put 285 rear, 275 front.. but if you want to be able to rotate your tires , go ahead and get 275/35 all around. That would look awesome as well.
