Tire size?

ok well its really simple i just went through this a while back. my tires are 275/40 r 17 in my case 275 is width wher rubber meets the road, 40 is the size of the wall or side of the tire. and 17 means its for a 17 inch wheel.
you have 17's on there now. lets say stock it came with 15's. stock probably was 225/60 r 15.... this may be wrong... anyway the width (first number) is up to you i like alot of rubber on the road. the confusing part is the second number. if you had 15's stock and the tire hight was a 60, then if you got 16 inch rims you would have to get a shorter tire to make up for the bigger rim. so 225/50 r 16. this way your overall wheel plus tire size is the same. If that changed you would have to recalibrate your speedo etc. Now you have 17's so you need an even smaller tire 225/40/ r 17. I have 275/40 r 17 i like a wider tire and i dont think 225 will wfit a 9 inch rim.. so make your tires a little fatter 265-275 you need a 40 second number or hight and r 17 to fit your 17 inch rim.... hope that helps!!

But say you have a original 15" rim / tire combo The stock tire size in 225/60/R15

The tire sizes are read out in mm (milimeters), % & inches respectively. With the R designating radial tires. The main goal for selecting the correct +2 tires size is to figure out your overall tire size so you don't screw up your speedometer and odometer.

*note 25.4mm = 1" for all of us Standard measurement folks

225 = 8.858" wide
60 or 60% of 225 = 135 (5.314") size of the sidewall
R15 = 15"
Add this all up = 15+5.314+5.314 [remember to double the side wall] = 25.629921"

That is the overall size of the stock Mustang tire. Now, you can go to www.google.com search "tire size calculator
Adding all of that up = 25.628831"

Now you know the overall size of the stock Mustang tire. You can then take this to google: Search for "tire size calculator" and you can then figure out what you need from there.

I think the 245/45/17 will probably give you a little more width while keeping the overall size very similar to the correct tire size. In fact the 245 tire would be 25.681102" in diamter and 9.645" wide.

The best fitting wheel/tire combo on a stock suspension (retaining the axle dampers) is the 17x9 Cobra wheel with 275/40ZR17 tires (optimal width for the rim and the same height as the original 225/60R15 and 225/55R16 tires) the best fit for the front to keep from rubbing in the wheel well is a 17x8 factory 1998 Cobra wheel (looks the same as the 17x9 rim) with 245/45ZR17 tires (again, they are the same height as the factory tire).

BFGoodrich are an inexpensive brand with better grip than most of the more expensive tires as well as many weather specific tread patterns, but I prefer the Michelins.

As far as drag slicks go, you can get them if you want to, but good driving on a good set of street tires will provide some impressive results on there own. Drag wheels and tires are a little more tricky, but a 235/60R15 BFG Drag Radial on stock 15x7 10-hole rims will work, as will the 275/50R15 Drag Radial on a set of 15x9 drag wheels with the same bag spacing as the 17x9 Cobra wheels. If it was mine I'd get 245/45/17 on the front and 275/40/17 on the back......both of those sizes are stock overall diameter. For those that don't know, the second number in the sizing is the percentage of the first number.....meaning on a 245/45/17, the sidewall height is 45% of 245 mm.
