Tire? Sumitomo HTR Z Tire (315/35-17)

Looking for a cheap street tire that can hook decent at the track. How are these tires in the rain, and is it possible to cut sub 2.0 60ft times with these tires with a bolt on 2v?

had these in 275/40/17s . good tire for the price. not noisy. better than expected traction. no problems in the rain.

They last a while, corner alright, but they don't hook. 2.1 is the best I could get out of my 315's and that's on a hot, well prepped track. Of course, different suspension setups and track crap could bring better results.

On the street they are about 3x worse. I have never hooked in 1st and the best I can do is get a little squirming for part of 2nd (only on a hot day with hot pavement). If it's cold out, forget it. 1st and second are useless, 2nd breaks loose at any point in 2nd just jabbing the gas. On the spray it'll break loose in 3rd from a roll when it's cold out, but when it's hot they'll stick in 3rd.

That being said, they are very predictable tires and serve their purpose as an inexpensive tire that will give you lots of life. I've bought two sets, but next time (hopefully) I'll be stepping to something with more traction now that I'm spraying.

I kind of figured they won't hook that great. I will give them a shot thou. Price is right lol.

I think this is what tire I am getting ready to go to myself. My car and myself are going to be taking a trip to New York Feb. 28th so I need a new tire for that long trip since mine are about wore out.

hope your car isnt lowered lol..... roads in NY are HORRIBLE!!!!!

Nittos are only a little bit more money, but are a MUCH better tire. With a 255 width, I cut 1.9s with the automatic at the track with ease. Got almost 30k on them and not planning to replace them for at least another 10k. Great in the rain, and very quiet. All in all, probably the best tire for the money.

The sumi's are great for what they are.....cheap street tire, but if you are wanting any kind of traction you will have to go with nitto, hooser or mickey. if you drive alot then the 555 will work great just lower the pressure at the track, and if you want to bridge the gap a little more then go with 05's. I love my NT05's 315 on the back and they seem to wear pretty good on the streets. The traction at the track is awsome

The big thing I have to credit the Sumi's with is treadlife. The compound is like a rock (why they don't hook except in very hot conditions).

My first set I mistakenly ran overinflated (40-42lbs, yeah...) and wore the centers well before the edges. I dropped the PSI down when I realized this (to 32lbs) and still got a few thousand more miles out of them, probably 20k in all with some VERY serious abuse... like teenager with a "fast" car abuse, cause at first that's what it was. On the day I replaced them, I did a 2nd gear proper disposal of them. I think I did this in April of 2009, and there's still a little bit of the marks left today...

This new set I started out at 32psi and they still have 70%-ish tread after that much time. My driving habits changed, but I have autocrossed on them and they've still seen their fare share of spinning.

I ran summi 275's out back for a while and like everyone else a decent cheap street tire. I think it was the HTRZ II, I wouldn't buy them again though, I like the nitto better. Again for a cheap tire its good.

my car is lowered...a lot. That's not good to hear. I have to drive to NY, then go over the PA for another month. Then Back to AR.

I've heard sumitomos suck. I was going to get them before I did some research. I ended up getting nitto 555's 315/35/17 and am happy with them. They almost hold the car down in first...

i ran very consistant 2.0s on my sumitomo's in a light notchback with 4:10s.

i've got like 10k miles on mine, lots of tire spinning. tires are still in great shape. for what you pay, you get a great tire. bar none.. my tires grab every bit of second gear with 440 rwhp. even today when it was 39 degrees..

i don't see how you are blowing off 2 gears without a hot surface.

on my mostly stock rear suspension setup from 97 I cut 2.0x with them (minus replacement shocks and flsfc). As for handling they did just fine in the corners after i did more suspension work. I auto-crossed with them once and was able to beat a 2004-ish wrx by a quarter of a second

only bad thing is they look like an all season tire from the back and i had small rubber issues on one of my tail pipes and one quad shock when the suspension was in a certain part of the travel. I just moved the quad in a 1/8 of an inch and have had zero issues.

They are perfect for a average stang DD IMHO

That's very surprising. Where they the HTR-Z's, and in the 315 size? The 315's have a very stiff, small sidewall. They give no flex whatsoever.

You must have been on a very well prepped track or have lots of suspension mods. My 315 555's (which I know are better hooking) will still chirp if I'm cruising in 2nd and gun it. If i gun it in 1st there is no chance. I also have only around 330 rwhp...
