Tried search...help!!

Hi guys, wee problem here.

I have a "knocking" sound, i think its the air box? or pump.
I'm not really sure since i've never had a problem with this hardware, and i usually learn how to fix, or what somthing is once it breaks

This knock is originating from, if you are standing at the hood of the car looking in the engine, the lower left pully it seems. I pulled off the belt, and started the car, and the sound wasn't around, and it is for SURE comming from that area, its not the alt, since its brand new and gave up 2 weeks ago and i replaced it.

SO i guess my qestion is, how much of a pain in the ass is this going to be, and how expensive?

Will i damage the car if i drive it? Is it the smog pump? And if i just bypass it will it cause problems? If i can bypass it, do i just buy a smaller belt.

Thanks for the answers guys, i live on vancouver island, so i don't need to pass aircare, and i've already cut 1 set of cats from this car. I hope the quick fix is to just bypass it, since i have a few issues with this car right now that needs my attention.

Exhaust was done by a freind... let me tell you, skinning a deer looks more pretty then the welding job Brakes, list goes on, so as i said, if its NOT important this will get it off my mind.

Remember the stethoscope? You own one but probably don't realize it: use a long screwdriver for one. If you don't have a long screwdriver, then a broom handle with a tin can screwed to one end is an excellent subistiute. Put it on the side of the engine where the noise is coming from, then put your ear on the handle (or open end of the tin can) and listen for the noise. Move it around from one accesory to the other & try to localize the noise.

Heater hose makes a pretty good stethoscope, too ! Just watch out for the fan.

If you had the belt off, did you wiggle the pulley on the air pump for exccessive play / wobble ? Lots of guys remove their air pump so maybe they will chime in shortly on the how-to's.

I sure hope so, if i don't really need it, i'd just as soon toss it then replace it, save weight, and get rid of that painful noise.

theres only two bolts that hold it on. take them out...undo the lines going to it and rip it out. it might need a little moving back and forth to get it out...but it will fall out...dont let it land on your hand our head...it weighs a few pounds. and just take out all those lines and plug the line going down to your h-pipe. i did it in the dark with a flash light in like 30 minutes

forwarning, if you do remove it you will need a shorter belt, trial and error for the exact size is how most do it.

Awsome, i just wanted to know if it would mess anything up.

One thing however, if thats the case, just what the hell is it for?

Anyone? I just need to know if this is a good idea, i keep hearing storys of pinging, and such. If this is the case i'll just buy a new one, but if its worth it more, to just ditch it? I am assuming here i do not need it, my car has 1 set of cats on it since i cut the others, but did this create this problem?

I want to make sure im informed before i start taking random crap off my engine
